And what Samuel had said happened to all Israel. And Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and the battle spread, and Israel was routed before the Philistines; and they slew in battle array in the field about four thousand men.
3
And the people came into the camp; and the elders of Israel said, Why has Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch ourselves the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4
So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there by the ark of the covenant ofGod.
5
And it came to pass when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, that all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth shook.
6
And the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, and said, What is the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah had come into the camp.
7
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said,God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there has not been such a thing heretofore.
8
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mightygods? these are thegods that smote the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
9
Shew yourselves valiant and be men, ye Philistines, that ye may not have to be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been servants to you: be men, and fight.
10
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was routed, and they fled every man to his tent; and there was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11
And the ark ofGod was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
12
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the battle, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.
13
And when he came, behold, Eli was sitting upon the seat by the way-side watching; for his heart trembled for the ark ofGod. And the man came to tell it in the city, and all the city cried out.
14
And Eli heard the noise of the crying, and said, What is the noise of this tumult? And the man came hastily, and told Eli.
15
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.
16
And the man said to Eli, I am he that came out of the battle, and I have fled to-day out of the battle. And he said, What has taken place, my son?
17
And the messenger answered and said, Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark ofGod is taken.
18
And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark ofGod, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for the man was old, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19
And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark ofGod was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20
And as she was dying, the women that stood by her said, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she did not answer, neither did she take it to heart.
21
And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark ofGod was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel, for the ark ofGod is taken.

Timueruntque Philisthiim, dicentes: Venit Deus in castra. Et ingemuerunt, dicentes:

Væ nobis: non enim fuit tanta exultatio heri et nudiustertius: væ nobis. Quis nos salvabit de manu Deorum sublimium istorum? hi sunt Dii, qui percusserunt Ægyptum omni plaga, in deserto.

Confortamini, et estote viri, Philisthiim: ne serviatis Hebræis, sicut et illi servierunt vobis: confortamini, et bellate.
10
Pugnaverunt ergo Philisthiim, et cæsus est Israel, et fugit unusquisque in tabernaculum suum: et facta est plaga magna nimis: et ceciderunt de Israel triginta millia peditum.
11
Et arca Dei capta est: duo quoque filii Heli mortui sunt, Ophni et Phinees.
12
Currens autem vir de Beniamin ex acie, venit in Silo in die illa, scissa veste, et conspersus pulvere caput.
13
Cumque ille venisset, Heli sedebat super sellam contra viam spectans. Erat enim cor eius pavens pro arca Dei. Vir autem ille postquam ingressus est, nunciavit urbi: et ululavit omnis civitas.
14
Et audivit Heli sonitum clamoris, dixitque: Quis est hic sonitus tumultus huius? At ille festinavit, et venit, et nunciavit Heli.
15
Heli autem erat nonaginta et octo annorum, et oculi eius caligaverant, et videre non poterat.
16
Et dixit ad Heli: Ego sum qui veni de prælio, et ego qui de acie fugi hodie. Cui ille ait: Quid actum est fili mi?
17
Respondens autem ille, qui nunciabat, Fugit, inquit, Israel coram Philisthiim, et ruina magna facta est in populo: insuper et duo filii tui mortui sunt, Ophni et Phinees: et arca Dei capta est.
18
Cumque ille nominasset arcam Dei, cecidit de sella retrorsum iuxta ostium, et fractis cervicibus mortuus est. Senex enim erat vir et grandævus: et ipse iudicavit Israel quadraginta annis.
19
Nurus autem eius, uxor Phinees, prægnans erat, vicinaque partui: et audito nuncio quod capta esset arca Dei, et mortuus esset socer suus, et vir suus, incurvavit se et peperit: irruerant enim in eam dolores subiti.
20
In ipso autem momento mortis eius, dixerunt ei quæ stabant circa eam: Ne timeas, quia filium peperisti. Quæ non respondit eis, neque animadvertit.
21
Et vocabit puerum, Ichabod, dicens: Translata est gloria de Israel, quia capta est arca Dei, et pro socero suo et pro viro suo;
22
et ait: Translata est gloria ab Israel, eo quod capta esset arca Dei.

And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there <FI>are<Fi> two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.
5
And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout--a great shout--and the earth is moved.
6
And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What <FI>is<Fi> the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.
7
And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Woe to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.
8
Woe to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these <FI>are<Fi> the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
9
Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you--then ye have become men, and have fought.'
10
And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;
11
and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.
12
And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes <FI>are<Fi> rent, and earth on his head;
13
and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare <FI>it<Fi> in the city, and all the city crieth out.
14
And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What--the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.
15
And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.
16
And the man saith unto Eli, `I <FI>am<Fi> he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'
17
And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died--Hophni and Phinehas--and the ark of God hath been captured.'
18
And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man <FI>is<Fi> old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, <FI>is<Fi> pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.
20
And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart <FI>to it<Fi> ;
21
and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22
And she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'

A long, long time ago, there was nothing at all - no earth, no sky, no animals, no people. It was all dark and empty. But God was there! God is so powerful that He can make anything just by speaking. So God said "Let there be light!" and BOOM! There was light everywhere! God saw that the light was beautiful and good. He called the light "day" and the darkness "night." This was the very first day when God started making our wonderful world!
