And the Philistines assembled their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
2
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of terebinths, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3
And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side; and the ravine was between them.
4
And there went out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
5
And he had a helmet of bronze upon his head, and he was clothed with a corselet of scales; and the weight of the corselet was five thousand shekels of bronze.
6
And he had greaves of bronze upon his legs, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders.
7
And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and the shield-bearer went before him.
8
And he stood and cried to the ranks of Israel, and said to them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I the Philistine, and ye servants of Saul? choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me.
9
If he be able to fight with me, and to smite me, then will we be your servants; but if I overcome and smite him, then shall ye be our servants and serve us.
10
And the Philistine said, I have defied the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
11
And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
12
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-Judah whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons; and the man was old in the days of Saul, advanced [in years] among men.
13
And the three eldest of the sons of Jesse had gone and followed Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14
And David was the youngest; and the three eldest had followed Saul.
15
But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
16
And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17
And Jesse said to David his son, Take, I pray, for thy brethren, this ephah of parched [corn] and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to thy brethren;
18
and carry these ten cheeses to the captain of the thousand, and visit thy brethren to see how they are, and take a pledge of them.
19
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel [were] in the valley of terebinths, fighting against the Philistines.
20
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took his charge and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the wagon-defence; and the host which was going forth to the battle-array shouted for the fight.
21
And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, rank against rank.
22
And David left the things he was carrying in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran into the ranks, and came and saluted his brethren.
23
And as he talked with them, behold there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard [them].
24
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were greatly afraid.
25
And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that comes up? for to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who smites him, him will the king enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
26
And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that smites this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the livingGod?
27
And the people told him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that smites him.
28
And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard while he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
29
And David said, What have I now done? Was it not laid upon me?
30
And he turned from him to another, and spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31
And the words were heard which David spoke, and they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.
32
And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him: thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34
And David said to Saul, Thy servant fed his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and also a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock.
35
And I went after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I seized him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36
Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, because he has defied the armies of the livingGod.
37
And David said, Jehovah who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and Jehovah be with thee.
38
And Saul clothed David with his dress, and put a helmet of bronze upon his head, and clothed him with a corselet.
39
And David girded his sword upon his dress, and endeavoured to go; for he had not yet tried [it]. And David said to Saul, I cannot go in these; for I have never tried [them]. And David put them off him.
40
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag that he had, into the pocket; and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.
41
And the Philistine came on and approached David; and the man that bore the shield was before him.
42
And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was a youth, and ruddy, and besides of a beautiful countenance.
43
And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by hisgods.
44
And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the heavens and to the beasts of the field.
45
And David said to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin; but I come to thee in the name of Jehovah of hosts, theGod of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46
This day will Jehovah deliver thee up into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens and to the wild beasts of the earth. And all the earth shall know that Israel has aGod;
47
and all this congregation shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Jehovah's, and he will give you into our hands.
48
And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and advanced to meet David, that David hasted, and ran towards the ranks to meet the Philistine.
49
And David put his hand into the bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead; and he fell on his face to the earth.
50
So David overcame the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and smote the Philistine and killed him; and there was no sword in the hand of David.
51
And David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him completely, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled.
52
And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to the ravine and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down on the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.

And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they pillaged their camps.
54
And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55
And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this young man? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
56
And the king said, Inquire thou whose son this youth is.
57
And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58
And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? And David said, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.

si quiverit pugnare mecum, et percusserit me, erimus vobis servi: si autem ego prævaluero, et percussero eum, vos servi eritis, et servietis nobis.

Et aiebat Philisthæus: Ego exprobravi agminibus Israel hodie: Date mihi virum, et ineat mecum singulare certamen.

Audiens autem Saul, et omnes Israelitæ sermones Philisthæi huiuscemodi, stupebant, et metuebant nimis.

David autem erat filius viri Ephrathæi, de quo supra dictum est, de Bethlehem Iuda, cui nomen erat Isai, qui habebat octo filios, et erat vir in diebus Saul senex, et grandævus inter viros.

Abierunt autem tres filii eius maiores post Saul in prælium: et nomina trium filiorum eius, qui perrexerunt ad bellum, Eliab primogenitus, et secundus Abinadab, tertiusque Samma.

David autem erat minimus. Tribus ergo maioribus secutis Saulem,

abiit David, et reversus est a Saul, ut pasceret gregem patris sui in Bethlehem.

Procedebat vero Philisthæus mane et vespere, et stabat quadraginta diebus.

Dixit autem Isai ad David filium suum: Accipe fratribus tuis ephi polentæ, et decem panes istos, et curre in castra ad fratres tuos,

et decem formellas casei has deferes ad tribunum: et fratres tuos visitabis, si recte agant: et cum quibus ordinati sunt, disce.

Saul autem, et illi, et omnes filii Israel, in Valle terebinthi pugnabant adversum Philisthiim.

Surrexit itaque David mane, et commendavit gregem custodi: et onustus abiit, sicut præceperat ei Isai. Et venit ad locum Magala, et ad exercitum, qui egressus ad pugnam vociferatus erat in certamine.

Direxerat enim aciem Israel, sed et Philisthiim ex adverso fuerant præparati.
22
Derelinquens ergo David vasa, quæ attulerat, sub manu custodis ad sarcinas, cucurrit ad locum certaminis, et interrogabat si omnia recte agerentur erga fratres suos.

Cumque adhuc ille loqueretur eis, apparuit vir ille spurius ascendens, Goliath nomine, Philisthæus, de Geth, de castris Philisthinorum: et loquente eo hæc eadem verba audivit David.

Omnes autem Israelitæ, cum vidissent virum, fugerunt a facie eius, timentes eum valde.

Et dixit unus quispiam de Israel: Num vidistis virum hunc, qui ascendit? ad exprobrandum enim Israeli ascendit. Virum ergo, qui percusserit eum, ditabit rex divitiis magnis, et filiam suam dabit ei, et domum patris eius faciet absque tributo in Israel.

Et ait David ad viros, qui stabant secum, dicens: Quid dabitur viro, qui percusserit Philisthæum hunc, et tulerit opprobrium de Israel? quis enim est hic Philisthæus incircumcisus, qui exprobravit acies Dei viventis?

Referebat autem ei populus eumdem sermonem, dicens: Hæc dabuntur viro, qui percusserit eum.

Quod cum audisset Eliab frater eius maior, loquente eo cum aliis, iratus est contra David, et ait: Quare venisti, et quare dereliquisti pauculas oves illas in deserto? ego novi superbiam tuam, et nequitiam cordis tui: quia ut videres prælium, descendisti.

Et dixit David: Quid feci? numquid non verbum est?
30
Et declinavit paululum ab eo ad alium: dixitque eundem sermonem. Et respondit ei populus verbum sicut prius.
31
Audita sunt autem verba, quæ locutus est David, et annunciata in conspectu Saul.
32
Ad quem cum fuisset adductus, locutus est ei: Non concidat cor cuiusquam in eo: ego servus tuus vadam, et pugnabo adversus Philisthæum.
33
Et ait Saul ad David: Non vales resistere Philisthæo isti, nec pugnare adversus eum: quia puer es, hic autem vir bellator est ab adolescentia sua.
34
Dixitque David ad Saul: Pascebat servus tuus patris sui gregem, et veniebat leo, vel ursus, et tollebat arietem de medio gregis:
35
et persequebar eos, et percutiebam, eruebamque de ore eorum: et illi consurgebant adversum me, et apprehendebam mentum eorum, et suffocabam, interficiebamque eos.
36
Nam et leonem, et ursum interfeci ego servus tuus: erit igitur et Philisthæus hic incircumcisus, quasi unus ex eis. Nunc vadam, et auferam opprobrium populi: quoniam quis est iste Philisthæus incircumcisus, qui ausus est maledicere exercitui Dei viventis?

Et ait David: Dominus qui eripuit me de manu leonis, et de manu ursi, ipse me liberabit de manu Philisthæi huius. Dixit autem Saul ad David: Vade, et Dominus tecum sit.

Et induit Saul David vestimentis suis, et imposuit galeam æream super caput eius, et vestivit eum lorica.
39
Accinctus ergo David gladio eius super vestem suam, cœpit tentare si armatus posset incedere: non enim habebat consuetudinem. Dixitque David ad Saul: Non possum sic incedere, quia non usum habeo. Et deposuit ea,

et tulit baculum suum, quem semper habebat in manibus: et elegit sibi quinque limpidissimos lapides de torrente, et misit eos in peram pastoralem, quam habebat secum, et fundam manu tulit: et processit adversum Philisthæum.

ibat autem Philisthæus incedens, et appropinquans adversum David, et armiger eius ante eum.
42
Cumque inspexisset Philisthæus, et vidisset David, despexit eum. Erat enim adolescens: rufus, et pulcher aspectu.

Et dixit Philisthæus ad David: Numquid ego canis sum, quod tu venis ad me cum baculo? Et maledixit Philisthæus David in diis suis:

dixitque ad David: Veni ad me, et dabo carnes tuas volatilibus cæli et bestiis terræ.

Dixit autem David ad Philisthæum: Tu venis ad me cum gladio, et hasta, et clypeo: ego autem venio ad te in nomine Domini exercituum, Dei agminum Israel, quibus exprobrasti

hodie, et dabit te Dominus in manu mea, et percutiam te, et auferam caput tuum a te: et dabo cadavera castrorum Philisthiim hodie volatilibus cæli, et bestiis terræ: ut sciat omnis terra quia est Deus in Israel.

Et noverit universa ecclesia hæc, quia non in gladio, nec in hasta salvat Dominus: ipsius enim est bellum, et tradet vos in manus nostras.

Cum ergo surrexisset Philisthæus, et veniret, et appropinquaret contra David, festinavit David, et cucurrit ad pugnam ex adverso Philisthæi.

Et misit manum suam in peram, tulitque unum lapidem, et funda iecit, et circumducens percussit Philisthæum in fronte: et infixus est lapis in fronte eius, et cecidit in faciem suam super terram.

Prævaluitque David adversum Philisthæum in funda et lapide, percussumque Philisthæum interfecit. Cumque gladium non haberet in manu David,

cucurrit, et stetit super Philisthæum, et tulit gladium eius, et eduxit eum de vagina sua: et interfecit eum, præciditque caput eius. Videntes autem Philisthiim, quod mortuus esset fortissimus eorum, fugerunt.

Et consurgentes viri Israel et Iuda vociferati sunt, et persecuti sunt Philisthæos usque dum venirent in vallem, et usque ad portas Accaron, cecideruntque vulnerati de Philisthiim in via Saraim, et usque ad Geth, et usque ad Accaron.

Et revertentes filii Israel postquam persecuti fuerant Philisthæos, invaserunt castra eorum.

if he be able to fight with me, and have smitten me, then we have been to you for servants; and if I am able for him, and have smitten him, then ye have been to us for servants, and have served us.'

And the Philistine saith, `I have reproached the ranks of Israel this day; give to me a man, and we fight together.'

And Saul heareth--and all Israel--these words of the Philistine, and they are broken down and greatly afraid.
12
And David <FI>is<Fi> son of this Ephrathite of Beth-Lehem-Judah, whose name <FI>is<Fi> Jesse, and he hath eight sons, and the man in the days of Saul hath become aged among men;
13
and the three eldest sons of Jesse go, they have gone after Saul to battle; and the name of his three sons who have gone into battle <FI>are<Fi> Eliab the first-born, and his second Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

And David is the youngest, and the three eldest have gone after Saul,

and David is going and returning from Saul, to feed the flock of his father at Beth-Lehem.

And the Philistine draweth nigh, morning and evening, and stationeth himself forty days.

And Jesse saith to David his son, `Take, I pray thee, to thy brethren, an ephah of this roasted <FI>corn<Fi> , and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

and these ten cuttings of the cheese thou dost take in to the head of the thousand, and thy brethren thou dost inspect for welfare, and their pledge dost receive.'

And Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel <FI>are<Fi> in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
20
And David riseth early in the morning, and leaveth the flock to a keeper, and lifteth up, and goeth, as Jesse commanded him, and he cometh in to the path, and to the force which is going out unto the rank, and they have shouted for battle;
21
and Israel and the Philistines set in array rank to meet rank.
22
And David letteth down the goods from off him on the hand of a keeper of the goods, and runneth into the rank, and cometh and asketh of his brethren of welfare.
23
And he is speaking with them, and lo, a man of the duellists is coming up, Goliath the Philistine <FI>is<Fi> his name, of Gath, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he speaketh according to those words, and David heareth;
24
and all the men of Israel when they see the man flee from his presence, and are greatly afraid.
25
And the men of Israel say, `Have ye seen this man who is coming up? for, to reproach Israel he is coming up, and it hath been--the man who smiteth him, the king doth enrich him with great riches, and his daughter he doth give to him, and his father's house doth make free in Israel.'

And David speaketh unto the men who are standing by him, saying, `What is done to the man who smiteth this Philistine, and hath turned aside reproach from Israel? for who <FI>is<Fi> this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of the living God?'
27
And the people speak to him according to this word, saying, `Thus it is done to the man who smiteth him.'
28
And Eliab, his eldest brother, heareth when he speaketh unto the men, and the anger of Eliab burneth against David, and he saith, `Why <FI>is<Fi> this--thou hast come down! and to whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I have known thy pride, and the evil of thy heart--for, to see the battle thou hast come down.'

And David saith, `What have I done now? is it not a word?'
30
And he turneth round from him unto another, and saith according to this word, and the people return him word as the first word.
31
And the words which David hath spoken are heard, and they declare before Saul, and he receiveth him;
32
and David saith unto Saul, `Let no man's heart fall because of him, thy servant doth go, and hath fought with this Philistine.'
33
And Saul saith unto David, `Thou art not able to go unto this Philistine, to fight with him, for a youth thou <FI>art<Fi> , and he a man of war from his youth.'
34
And David saith unto Saul, `A shepherd hath thy servant been to his father among the sheep, and the lion hath come--and the bear--and hath taken away a sheep out of the drove,
35
and I have gone out after him, and smitten him, and delivered out of his mouth, and he riseth against me, and I have taken hold on his beard, and smitten him, and put him to death.
36
Both the lion and the bear hath thy servant smitten, and this uncircumcised Philistine hath been as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of the living God.'
37
And David saith, `Jehovah, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He doth deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.' And Saul saith unto David, `Go, and Jehovah is with thee.'
38
And Saul clotheth David with his long robe, and hath put a helmet of brass on his head, and doth clothe him with a coat of mail.
39
And David girded his sword above his long robe, and beginneth to go, for he hath not tried <FI>it<Fi> ; and David saith unto Saul, `I am not able to go with these, for I had not tried;' and David turneth them aside from off him.
40
And he taketh his staff in his hand, and chooseth for him five smooth stones from the brook, and putteth them in the shepherds' habiliments that he hath, even in the scrip, and his sling <FI>is<Fi> in his hand, and he draweth nigh unto the Philistine.
41
And the Philistine goeth on, going and drawing near unto David, and the man bearing the buckler <FI>is<Fi> before him,
42
and the Philistine looketh attentively, and seeth David, and despiseth him, for he was a youth, and ruddy, with a fair appearance.
43
And the Philistine saith unto David, `Am I a dog that thou art coming unto me with staves?' and the Philistine revileth David by his gods,
44
and the Philistine saith unto David, `Come unto me, and I give thy flesh to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the field.'
45
And David saith unto the Philistine, `Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.
46
This day doth Jehovah shut thee up into my hand--and I have smitten thee, and turned aside thy head from off thee, and given the carcase of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth, and all the earth do know that God is for Israel.
47
and all this assembly do know that not by sword and by spear doth Jehovah save, that the battle <FI>is<Fi> Jehovah's, and He hath given you into our hand.'

And it hath come to pass, that the Philistine hath risen, and goeth, and draweth near to meet David, and David hasteth and runneth to the rank to meet the Philistine,
49
and David putteth forth his hand unto the vessel, and taketh thence a stone, and slingeth, and smiteth the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sinketh into his forehead, and he falleth on his face to the earth.
50
And David is stronger than the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smiteth the Philistine, and putteth him to death, and there is no sword in the hand of David,
51
