Laying aside therefore all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envyings and all evil speakings,
2
as newborn babes desire earnestly the pure mental milk of the word, that by it ye may grow up to salvation,
3
if indeed ye have tasted that the Lord [is] good.
4
To whom coming, a living stone, cast away indeed as worthless by men, but withGod chosen, precious,
5
yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable toGod by Jesus Christ.
6
Because it is contained in the scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believes on him shall not be put to shame.
7
To you therefore who believe [is] the preciousness; but to the disobedient, the stone which the builders cast away as worthless, this is become head of [the] corner,
8
and a stone of stumbling and rock of offence; [who] stumble at the word, being disobedient to which also they have been appointed.
9
But ye [are] a chosen race, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a people for a possession, that ye might set forth the excellencies of him who has called you out of darkness to his wonderful light;
10
who once [were] not a people, but nowGod's people; who were not enjoying mercy, but now have found mercy.
11
Beloved, I exhort [you], as strangers and sojourners, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12
having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that [as to that] in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may through [your] good works, [themselves] witnessing [them], glorifyGod in [the] day of visitation.
13
Be in subjection [therefore] to every human institution for the Lord's sake; whether to [the] king as supreme,
14
or to rulers as sent by him, for vengeance on evildoers, and praise to them that do well.
15
Because so is the will ofGod, that by well-doing ye put to silence the ignorance of senseless men;
16
as free, and not as having liberty as a cloak of malice, but asGod's bondmen.
17
Shew honour to all, love the brotherhood, fearGod, honour the king.
18
Servants, [be] subject with all fear to your masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the ill-tempered.
19
For this [is] acceptable, if one, for conscience sake towardsGod, endure griefs, suffering unjustly.
20
For what glory [is it], if sinning and being buffeted ye shall bear [it]? but if, doing good and suffering, ye shall bear [it], this is acceptable withGod.
21
For to this have ye been called; for Christ also has suffered for you, leaving you a model that ye should follow in his steps:
22
who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth;
23
who, [when] reviled, reviled not again; [when] suffering, threatened not; but gave [himself] over into the hands of him who judges righteously;
24
who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, in order that, being dead to sins, we may live to righteousness: by whose stripes ye have been healed.
25
For ye were going astray as sheep, but have now returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.

Qui aliquando non populus, nunc autem populus Dei: qui non consecuti misericordiam, nunc autem misericordiam consecuti.

Charissimi, obsecro vos tamquam advenas et peregrinos abstinere vos a carnalibus desideriis, quæ militant adversus animam,

conversationem vestram inter Gentes habentes bonam: ut in eo, quod detrectant de vobis tamquam de malefactoribus, ex bonis operibus vos considerantes, glorificent Deum in die visitationis.

Subiecti igitur estote omni humanæ creaturæ propter Deum: sive regi quasi præcellenti:

sive ducibus tamquam ab eo missis ad vindictam malefactorum, laudem vero bonorum:

quia sic est voluntas Dei, ut benefacientes obmutescere faciatis imprudentium hominum ignorantiam:

quasi liberi, et non quasi velamen habentes malitiæ libertatem, sed sicut servi Dei.

Servi subditi estote in omni timore dominis, non tantum bonis et modestis, sed etiam dyscolis.

Hæc est enim gratia, si propter Dei conscientiam sustinet qui tristitias, patiens iniuste.

Quæ enim est gloria, si peccantes, et colaphizati suffertis? sed si bene facientes patienter sustinetis: hæc est gratia apud Deum.

In hoc enim vocati estis: quia et Christus passus est pro nobis, vobis relinquens exemplum ut sequamini vestigia eius.

qui peccatum non fecit, nec inventus est dolus in ore eius:

qui cum malediceretur, non maledicebat: cum pateretur, non comminabatur: tradebat autem iudicanti se iniuste:

qui peccata nostra ipse pertulit in corpore suo super lignum: ut peccatis mortui, iustitiæ vivamus: cuius livore sanati estis.

Eratis enim sicut oves errantes, sed conversi estis nunc ad pastorem, et episcopum animarum vestrarum.

to whom coming--a living stone--by men, indeed, having been disapproved of, but with God choice, precious,

and ye yourselves, as living stones, are built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Wherefore, also, it is contained in the Writing: `Lo, I lay in Zion a chief corner-stone, choice, precious, and he who is believing on him may not be put to shame;'
7
to you, then, who are believing <FI>is<Fi> the preciousness; and to the unbelieving, a stone that the builders disapproved of, this one did become for the head of a corner,
8
and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence--who are stumbling at the word, being unbelieving, --to which also they were set;
9
and ye <FI>are<Fi> a choice race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired, that the excellences ye may shew forth of Him who out of darkness did call you to His wondrous light;
10
who <FI>were<Fi> once not a people, and <FI>are<Fi> now the people of God; who had not found kindness, and now have found kindness.

Beloved, I call upon <FI>you<Fi> , as strangers and sojourners, to keep from the fleshly desires, that war against the soul,
12
having your behaviour among the nations right, that in that which they speak against you as evil-doers, of the good works having beheld, they may glorify God in a day of inspection.
13
Be subject, then, to every human creation, because of the Lord, whether to a king, as the highest,
14
whether to governors, as to those sent through him, for punishment, indeed, of evil-doers, and a praise of those doing good;
15
because, so is the will of God, doing good, to put to silence the ignorance of the foolish men;
16
as free, and not having the freedom as the cloak of the evil, but as servants of God;
17
to all give ye honour; the brotherhood love ye; God fear ye; the king honour ye.
18
The domestics! be subjecting yourselves in all fear to the masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cross;
19
for this <FI>is<Fi> gracious, if because of conscience toward God any one doth endure sorrows, suffering unrighteously;
20
for what renown <FI>is it<Fi> , if sinning and being buffeted, ye do endure <FI>it<Fi> ? but if, doing good and suffering <FI>for it<Fi> , ye do endure, this <FI>is<Fi> gracious with God,
21
for to this ye were called, because Christ also did suffer for you, leaving to you an example, that ye may follow his steps,
22
who did not commit sin, nor was guile found in his mouth,
23
who being reviled--was not reviling again, suffering--was not threatening, and was committing himself to Him who is judging righteously,
24
who our sins himself did bear in his body, upon the tree, that to the sins having died, to the righteousness we may live; by whose stripes ye were healed,
25
for ye were as sheep going astray, but ye turned back now to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.
