Acts Chapter 7

5 insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them.

6 And there also came together the multitude from the cities round about Jerusalem, bringing sick folk, and them that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

7 But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,

8 and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward.

9 But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said,

10 Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.

11 And when they heard

12 this, they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison-house to have them brought.

13 But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told,

14 saying, The prison-house we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing at the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.

15 Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.

16 And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people.

17 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them,

18 but without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.

19 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,

20 saying, We strictly charged you not to teach in this name: and behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.

21 But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men.

22 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree.

23 Him did God exalt with his right hand

24 to be a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.

25 And we are witnesses of these things; and

26 so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

27 But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and were minded to slay them.

28 But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in honor of all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while.

29 And he said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as touching these men, what ye are about to do.

30 For before these days rose up Theudas, giving himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nought.

31 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away

32 some of the people after him: he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.

33 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown:

34 but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.

35 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

36 They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.

37 And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus

38 as the Christ.

39 Now in these days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

40 And the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not fit that we should forsake the word of God, and serve tables.

41 Look ye out therefore, brethren, from among you seven men of good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

42 But we will continue stedfastly in prayer, and in the ministry of the word.

43 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaüs a proselyte of Antioch;

44 whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands upon them.

45 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

46 And Stephen, full of grace and power, wrought great wonders and signs among the people.

47 But there arose certain of them that were of the synagogue called

48 the synagogue of the Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.

49 And they were not able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake.

50 Then they suborned men, who said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and

51 against God.

52 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and seized him, and brought him into the council,

53 and set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceaseth not to speak words against this holy place, and the law:

54 for we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered unto us.

55 And all that sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

56 And the high priest said, Are these things so?

57 And he said,

58 Brethren and fathers, hearken: The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

59 and said unto him, Get thee out of thy land, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee.

60 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Haran: and from thence, when his father was dead,

9 And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. AndGod was with him,

10 and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house.

11 But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food.

12 But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first;

13 and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.

14 And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all [his] kindred, seventy-five souls.

15 And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers,

16 and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the [father] of Sychem.

17 But as the time of promise drew near whichGod had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

18 until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph.

19 He dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live.

20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father.

21 And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself [to be] for a son.

22 And Moses was instructed in all [the] wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

23 And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel;

24 and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended [him], and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian.

25 For he thought that his brethren would understand thatGod by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not.

26 And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, Ye are brethren, why do ye wrong one another?

27 But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us?

28 Dost thou wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?

29 And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons.

30 And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush.

31 And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of [the] Lord,

32 I am theGod of thy fathers, theGod of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider [it].

33 And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.

34 I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt.

35 This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him didGod send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

36 He led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

37 This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shallGod raise up to you out of your brethren like me [him shall ye hear].

38 This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us;

39 to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,

40 saying to Aaron, Make usgods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him.

41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42 ButGod turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in [the] book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43 Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of [your]god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon.

44 Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen;

45 which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of [the lands of] the nations, whomGod drove out from [the] face of our fathers, until the days of David;

46 who found favour beforeGod, and asked to find a tabernacle for theGod of Jacob;

47 but Solomon built him a house.

48 But the Most High dwells not in [places] made with hands; as says the prophet,

49 The heaven [is] my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith [the] Lord, or where [is the] place of my rest?

50 has not my hand made all these things?

51 O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, ye also.

52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now become deliverers up and murderers!

53 who have received the law as ordained by [the] ministry of angels, and have not kept [it].

54 And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.

55 But being full of [the] Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw [the] glory ofGod, and Jesus standing at the right hand ofGod,

56 and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand ofGod.

57 And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;

58 and having cast [him] out of the city, they stoned [him]. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.

59 And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60 And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep.

2 He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

3 and said to him, ‘Get out of your land and away from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’

4 Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land where you are now living.

5 He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.

17 “But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 until there arose a different king who didn’t know Joseph.

19 The same took advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to abandon their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.

20 At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome to God. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.

21 When he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.

22 Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.

23 But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.

46 who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.

48 However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,

49 ‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is the place of my rest?

50 Didn’t my hand make all these things?’

51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.

52 Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.

53 You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”

54 Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
