But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.
2
And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
3
whom Jason hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king,
4
one Jesus.
5
And they troubled the multitude and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
6
And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
7
And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who when they were come thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
8
Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the scriptures daily, whether these things were so.
9
Many of them therefore believed; also of the Greek women of honorable estate, and of men, not a few.
10
But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed of Paul at Beroea also, they came thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudes.
11
And then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea: and Silas and Timothy abode there still.
12
But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timothy that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.
13
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he beheld the city full of idols.
14
So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with them that met him.
15
And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.
16
And they took hold of him, and brought him unto the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by thee?
17
For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
18
(Now all the Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.)
19
And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, and said,
20
Ye men of Athens, in all things I perceive that ye are very religious.
21
For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you.
22
The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
23
neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
24
and he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined
25
their appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation;
26
that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us:
27
for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said,
28
For we are also his offspring.
29
Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man.
30
The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:
31
inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32
Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again.
33
Thus Paul went out from among them.
34
But certain men clave unto him, and believed: among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
35
After these things he departed from Athens, and came to Corinth.
36
And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a man of Pontus by race, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome: and he came unto them;
37
and because he was of the same trade, he abode with them, and they wrought; for by their trade they were tentmakers.
38
And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded Jews and Greeks.
39
But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was constrained by the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.
40
And when they opposed themselves and blasphemed, he shook out his raiment and said unto them, Your blood

And when, having got away from them, we at last sailed away, we came by a direct course to Cos, and on the morrow to Rhodes, and thence to Patara.
2
And having found a ship passing over into Phoenicia, we went on board and sailed;
3
and having sighted Cyprus, and left it on the left hand, we sailed to Syria, and made the land at Tyre, for there the ship was to discharge her cargo.
4
And having found out the disciples, we remained there seven days; who said to Paul by the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem.
5
But when we had completed the days, we set out and took our journey, all of them accompanying us, with wives and children, till [we were] out of the city. And kneeling down upon the shore we prayed.
6
And having embraced one another, we went on board ship, and they returned home.
7
And we, having completed the voyage, arrived from Tyre at Ptolemais, and having saluted the brethren, we remained one day with them.
8
And leaving on the morrow, we came to Caesarea; and entering into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was of the seven, we abode with him.
9
Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
10
And as we stayed there many days, a certain man, by name Agabus, a prophet, came down from Judaea,
11
and coming to us and taking the girdle of Paul, and having bound his own hands and feet, said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, The man whose this girdle is shall the Jews thus bind in Jerusalem, and deliver him up into the hands of [the] Gentiles.
12
And when we heard these things, both we and those of the place besought [him] not to go up to Jerusalem.
13
But Paul answered, What do ye, weeping and breaking my heart? for I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
14
And when he would not be persuaded, we were silent, saying, The will of the Lord be done.
15
And after these days, having got our effects ready, we went up to Jerusalem.
16
And [some] of the disciples from Caesarea went with us, bringing [with them] a certain Mnason, a Cyprian, an old disciple, with whom we were to lodge.
17
And when we arrived at Jerusalem the brethren gladly received us.
18
And on the morrow Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders came there.
19
And having saluted them, he related one by one the things whichGod had wrought among the nations by his ministry.
20
And they having heard [it] glorifiedGod, and said to him, Thou seest, brother, how many myriads there are of the Jews who have believed, and all are zealous of the law.
21
And they have been informed concerning thee, that thou teachest all the Jews among the nations apostasy from Moses, saying that they should not circumcise their children, nor walk in the customs.
22
What is it then? a multitude must necessarily come together, for they will hear that thou art come.
23
This do therefore that we say to thee: We have four men who have a vow on them;
24
take these and be purified with them, and pay their expenses, that they may have their heads shaved; and all will know that [of those things] of which they have been informed about thee nothing is [true]; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, keeping the law.
25
But concerning [those of] the nations who have believed, we have written, deciding that they should [observe no such thing, only to] keep themselves both from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication.
26
Then Paul, taking the men, on the next day, having been purified, entered with them into the temple, signifying the time the days of the purification would be fulfilled, until the offering was offered for every one of them.
27
And when the seven days were nearly completed, the Jews from Asia, having seen him in the temple, set all the crowd in a tumult, and laid hands upon him,
28
crying, Israelites, help! this is the man who teaches all everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place, and has brought Greeks too into the temple, and profaned this holy place.
29
For they had before seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.
30
And the whole city was moved, and there was a concourse of the people; and having laid hold on Paul they drew him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.
31
And as they were seeking to kill him, a representation came to the chiliarch of the band that the whole of Jerusalem was in a tumult;
32
who, taking with him immediately soldiers and centurions, ran down upon them. But they, seeing the chiliarch and the soldiers, ceased beating Paul.
33
Then the chiliarch came up and laid hold upon him, and commanded [him] to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he might be, and what he had done.
34
And different persons cried some different thing in the crowd. But he, not being able to know the certainty on account of the uproar, commanded him to be brought into the fortress.
35
But when he got upon the stairs it was so that he was borne by the soldiers on account of the violence of the crowd.
36
For the multitude of the people followed, crying, Away with him.
37
But as he was about to be led into the fortress, Paul says to the chiliarch, Is it allowed me to say something to thee? And he said, Dost thou know Greek?
38
Thou art not then that Egyptian who before these days raised a sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the assassins?
39
But Paul said, I am a Jew of Tarsus, citizen of no insignificant city of Cilicia, and I beseech of thee, allow me to speak to the people.
40
And when he had allowed him, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people; and a great silence having been made, he addressed them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,

Et cum moraremur per dies aliquot, supervenit quidam a Iudæa propheta, nomine Agabus.

Is cum venisset ad nos, tulit zonam Pauli: et alligans sibi pedes, et manus dixit: Hæc dicit Spiritus sanctus: Virum, cuius est zona hæc, sic alligabunt in Ierusalem Iudæi, et tradent in manus Gentium.
12
Quod cum audissemus, rogabamus nos, et qui loci illius erant, ne ascenderet Ierosolymam.
13
Tunc respondit Paulus, et dixit: Quid facitis flentes, et affligentes cor meum? Ego enim non solum alligari, sed et mori in Ierusalem paratus sum propter nomen Domini Iesu.
14
Et cum ei suadere non possemus, quievimus, dicentes: Domini voluntas fiat.
15
Post dies autem istos præparati, ascendebamus in Ierusalem.
16
Venerunt autem et ex discipulis a Cæsarea nobiscum, adducentes secum apud quem hospitaremur Mnasonem quendam Cyprium, antiquum discipulum.
17
Et cum venissemus Ierosolymam, libenter exceperunt nos fratres.
18
Sequenti autem die introibat Paulus nobiscum ad Iacobum, omnesque collecti sunt seniores.
19
Quos cum salutasset, narrabat per singula, quæ Deus fecisset in Gentibus per ministerium ipsius.
20
At illi cum audissent, magnificabant Deum, dixeruntque ei: Vides frater, quot millia sunt in Iudæis, qui crediderunt, et omnes æmulatores sunt legis.
21
Audierunt autem de te quia discessionem doceas a Moyse eorum, qui per Gentes sunt, Iudæorum: dicens non debere eos circumcidere filios suos, neque secundum consuetudinem ingredi.
22
Quid ergo est? utique oportet convenire multitudinem: audient enim te supervenisse.
23
Hoc ergo fac quod tibi dicimus: Sunt nobis viri quattuor, votum habentes super se.
24
His assumptis, sanctifica te cum illis: et impende in illis ut radant capita: et scient omnes quia quæ de te audierunt, falsa sunt, sed ambulas et ipse custodiens legem.
25
De his autem, qui crediderunt ex Gentibus, nos scripsimus iudicantes ut abstineant se ab idolis, immolato, et sanguine, et suffocato, et fornicatione.
26
Tunc Paulus, assumptis viris, postera die purificatus cum illis intravit in templum, annuncians expletionem dierum purificationis, donec offerretur pro unoquoque eorum oblatio.
27
Dum autem septem dies consummarentur, hi, qui de Asia erant, Iudæi, cum vidissent eum in templo, concitaverunt omnem populum, et iniecerunt ei manus, clamantes:
28
Viri Israelitæ, adiuvate: hic est homo, qui adversus populum, et legem, et locum hunc, omnes ubique docens, insuper et Gentiles induxit in templum, et violavit sanctum locum istum.
29
Viderant enim Trophimum Ephesium in civitate cum ipso, quem æstimaverunt quoniam in templum introduxisset Paulus.
30
Commotaque est civitas tota, et facta est concursio populi. Et apprehendentes Paulum, trahebant eum extra templum: et statim clausæ sunt ianuæ.
31
Quærentibus autem eum occidere, nunciatum est tribuno cohortis: Quia tota confunditur Ierusalem.
32
Qui statim assumptis militibus, et centurionibus, decurrit ad illos. Qui cum vidissent tribunum, et milites, cessaverunt percutere Paulum.
33
Tunc accedens tribunus apprehendit eum, et iussit eum alligari catenis duabus: et interrogabat quis esset, et quid fecisset.
34
Alii autem aliud clamabant in turba. Et cum non posset certum cognoscere præ tumultu, iussit duci eum in castra.
35
Et cum venisset ad gradus, contigit ut portaretur a militibus propter vim populi.
36
Sequebatur enim multitudo populi, clamans: Tolle eum.
37
Et cum cœpisset induci in castra Paulus, dicit tribuno: Si licet mihi loqui aliquid ad te? Qui dixit: Græce nosti?
38
Nonne tu es Ægyptius, qui ante hos dies tumultum concitasti, et eduxisti in desertum quattuor millia virorum sicariorum?
39
Et dixit ad eum Paulus: Ego homo sum quidem Iudæus a Tarso Ciliciæ, non ignotæ civitatis municeps. Rogo autem te, permitte mihi loqui ad populum.
40
Et cum ille permisisset, Paulus stans in gradibus, annuit manu ad plebem, et magno silentio facto, allocutus est lingua Hebræa, dicens:

Coming to us and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, “The Holy Spirit says: ‘So the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

When we heard these things, both we and the people of that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.
13
Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
14
When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The Lord’s will be done.”

They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children and not to walk after the customs.
22
What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come.
23
Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.
24
Take them and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. Then all will know that there is no truth in the things that they have been informed about you, but that you yourself also walk keeping the law.
25
But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written our decision that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality.”
26
Then Paul took the men, and the next day purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.
27
When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the multitude and laid hands on him,
28
crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place. Moreover, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place!”
29
For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian, with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.
30
All the city was moved and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut.
31
As they were trying to kill him, news came up to the commanding officer of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
32
Immediately he took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. They, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, stopped beating Paul.
33
Then the commanding officer came near, arrested him, commanded him to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what he had done.
34
Some shouted one thing and some another, among the crowd. When he couldn’t find out the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks.
35
When he came to the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd;
36
for the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!”
37
As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he asked the commanding officer, “May I speak to you?” He said, “Do you know Greek?
38
Aren’t you then the Egyptian who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?”
39
But Paul said, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city. I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.”
40
When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. When there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,

τοτε απεκριθη [ο] παυλος τι ποιειτε κλαιοντες και συνθρυπτοντες μου την καρδιαν εγω γαρ ου μονον δεθηναι αλλα και αποθανειν εις ιερουσαλημ ετοιμως εχω υπερ του ονοματος του κυριου ιησου

μη πειθομενου δε αυτου ησυχασαμεν ειποντες του κυριου το θελημα γινεσθω

μετα δε τας ημερας ταυτας επισκευασαμενοι ανεβαινομεν εις ιεροσολυμα

συνηλθον δε και των μαθητων απο καισαριας συν ημιν αγοντες παρ ω ξενισθωμεν μνασωνι τινι κυπριω αρχαιω μαθητη
17
γενομενων δε ημων εις ιεροσολυμα ασμενως απεδεξαντο ημας οι αδελφοι
18
τη δε επιουση εισηει ο παυλος συν ημιν προς ιακωβον παντες τε παρεγενοντο οι πρεσβυτεροι
19
και ασπασαμενος αυτους εξηγειτο καθ εν εκαστον ων εποιησεν ο θεος εν τοις εθνεσιν δια της διακονιας αυτου
20
οι δε ακουσαντες εδοξαζον τον θεον ειπαν τε αυτω θεωρεις αδελφε ποσαι μυριαδες εισιν εν τοις ιουδαιοις των πεπιστευκοτων και παντες ζηλωται του νομου υπαρχουσιν

κατηχηθησαν δε περι σου οτι αποστασιαν διδασκεις απο μωυσεως τους κατα τα εθνη παντας ιουδαιους λεγων μη περιτεμνειν αυτους τα τεκνα μηδε τοις εθεσιν περιπατειν
22
τι ουν εστιν παντως ακουσονται οτι εληλυθας

τουτο ουν ποιησον ο σοι λεγομεν εισιν ημιν ανδρες τεσσαρες ευχην εχοντες αφ εαυτων
24
τουτους παραλαβων αγνισθητι συν αυτοις και δαπανησον επ αυτοις ινα ξυρησονται την κεφαλην και γνωσονται παντες οτι ων κατηχηνται περι σου ουδεν εστιν αλλα στοιχεις και αυτος φυλασσων τον νομον

περι δε των πεπιστευκοτων εθνων ημεις απεστειλαμεν κριναντες φυλασσεσθαι αυτους το τε ειδωλοθυτον και αιμα και πνικτον και πορνειαν

τοτε ο παυλος παραλαβων τους ανδρας τη εχομενη ημερα συν αυτοις αγνισθεις εισηει εις το ιερον διαγγελλων την εκπληρωσιν των ημερων του αγνισμου εως ου προσηνεχθη υπερ ενος εκαστου αυτων η προσφορα

ως δε εμελλον αι επτα ημεραι συντελεισθαι οι απο της ασιας ιουδαιοι θεασαμενοι αυτον εν τω ιερω συνεχεον παντα τον οχλον και επεβαλαν επ αυτον τας χειρας

κραζοντες ανδρες ισραηλιται βοηθειτε ουτος εστιν ο ανθρωπος ο κατα του λαου και του νομου και του τοπου τουτου παντας πανταχη διδασκων ετι τε και ελληνας εισηγαγεν εις το ιερον και κεκοινωκεν τον αγιον τοπον τουτον

And it came to pass, at our sailing, having been parted from them, having run direct, we came to Coos, and the succeeding <FI>day<Fi> to Rhodes, and thence to Patara,

and having found a ship passing over to Phenicia, having gone on board, we sailed,

and having discovered Cyprus, and having left it on the left, we were sailing to Syria, and did land at Tyre, for there was the ship discharging the lading.

And having found out the disciples, we tarried there seven days, and they said to Paul, through the Spirit, not to go up to Jerusalem;

but when it came that we completed the days, having gone forth, we went on, all bringing us on the way, with women and children, unto the outside of the city, and having bowed the knees upon the shore, we prayed,

and having embraced one another, we embarked in the ship, and they returned to their own friends.

And we, having finished the course, from Tyre came down to Ptolemais, and having saluted the brethren, we remained one day with them;

and on the morrow Paul and his company having gone forth, we came to Caesarea, and having entered into the house of Philip the evangelist--who is of the seven--we remained with him,

and this one had four daughters, virgins, prophesying.

And we remaining many more days, there came down a certain one from Judea, a prophet, by name Agabus,

and he having come unto us, and having taken up the girdle of Paul, having bound also his own hands and feet, said, `Thus saith the Holy Spirit, The man whose is this girdle--so shall the Jews in Jerusalem bind, and they shall deliver <FI>him<Fi> up to the hands of nations.'

And when we heard these things, we called upon <FI>him<Fi> --both we, and those of that place--not to go up to Jerusalem,
13
and Paul answered, `What do ye--weeping, and crushing mine heart? for I, not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem, am ready, for the name of the Lord Jesus;'

and he not being persuaded, we were silent, saying, `The will of the Lord be done.'

And after these days, having taken <FI>our<Fi> vessels, we were going up to Jerusalem,

and there went also of the disciples from Caesarea with us, bringing with them him with whom we may lodge, a certain Mnason of Cyprus, an aged disciple.

And we having come to Jerusalem, the brethren did gladly receive us,

and on the morrow Paul was going in with us unto James, all the elders also came,
19
and having saluted them, he was declaring, one by one, each of the things God did among the nations through his ministration,
20
and they having heard, were glorifying the Lord. They said also to him, `Thou seest, brother, how many myriads there are of Jews who have believed, and all are zealous of the law,
21
and they are instructed concerning thee, that apostasy from Moses thou dost teach to all Jews among the nations, saying--Not to circumcise the children, nor after the customs to walk;
22
what then is it? certainly the multitude it behoveth to come together, for they will hear that thou hast come.
23
`This, therefore, do that we say to thee: We have four men having a vow on themselves,
24
these having taken, be purified with them, and be at expence with them, that they may shave the head, and all may know that the things of which they have been instructed concerning thee are nothing, but thou dost walk--thyself also--the law keeping.
25
`And concerning those of the nations who have believed, we have written, having given judgment, that they observe no such thing, except to keep themselves both from idol-sacrifices, and blood, and a strangled thing, and whoredom.'

Then Paul, having taken the men, on the following day, with them having purified himself, was entering into the temple, announcing the fulfilment of the days of the purification, till the offering was offered for each one of them.

And, as the seven days were about to be fully ended, the Jews from Asia having beheld him in the temple, were stirring up all the multitude, and they laid hands upon him,
28
crying out, `Men, Israelites, help! this is the man who, against the people, and the law, and this place, all everywhere is teaching; and further, also, Greeks he brought into the temple, and hath defiled this holy place;'
29
for they had seen before Trophimus, the Ephesian, in the city with him, whom they were supposing that Paul brought into the temple.
30
All the city also was moved and there was a running together of the people, and having laid hold on Paul, they were drawing him out of the temple, and immediately were the doors shut,
31
and they seeking to kill him, a rumour came to the chief captain of the band that all Jerusalem hath been thrown into confusion,
32
who, at once, having taken soldiers and centurions, ran down upon them, and they having seen the chief captain and the soldiers, did leave off beating Paul.
33
Then the chief captain, having come nigh, took him, and commanded <FI>him<Fi> to be bound with two chains, and was inquiring who he may be, and what it is he hath been doing,
34
and some were crying out one thing, and some another, among the multitude, and not being able to know the certainty because of the tumult, he commanded him to be carried to the castle,
35
and when he came upon the steps, it happened he was borne by the soldiers, because of the violence of the multitude,
36
for the crowd of the people was following after, crying, `Away with him.'

And Paul being about to be led into the castle, saith to the chief captain, `Is it permitted to me to say anything unto thee?' and he said, `Greek dost thou know?

art not thou, then, the Egyptian who before these days made an uprising, and did lead into the desert the four thousand men of the assassins?'

And Paul said, `I, indeed, am a man, a Jew, of Tarsus of Cilicia, of no mean city a citizen; and I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.'

And he having given him leave, Paul having stood upon the stairs, did beckon with the hand to the people, and there having been a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew dialect, saying:
