And all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called,
2
Saith the Lord, who maketh these things known from of old.
3
Wherefore my judgment is, that we trouble not them that from among the Gentiles turn to God;
4
but that we write unto them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.
5
For Moses from generations of old hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath.
6
Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men out of their company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas;
7
namely, Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
8
and they wrote
9
thus by them, The apostles and the elders, brethren, unto the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting:
10
Forasmuch as we have heard that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls; to whom we gave no commandment;
11
it seemed good unto us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
12
men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
13
We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves also shall tell you the same things by word of mouth.
14
For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
15
that ye abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, it shall be well with you. Fare ye well.
16
So they, when they were dismissed, came down to Antioch; and having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle.
17
And when they had read it, they rejoiced for the consolation.
18
And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
19
And after they had spent some time
20
there, they were dismissed in peace from the brethren unto those that had sent them forth.
21

But it seemed good unto Silas to abide there.
23
But Paul and Barnabas tarried in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
24
And after some days Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us return now and visit the brethren in every city wherein we proclaimed the word of the Lord,
25
and see how they fare.
26
And Barnabas was minded to take with them John also, who was called Mark.
27
But Paul thought not good to take with them him who withdrew from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
28
And there arose a sharp contention, so that they parted asunder one from the other, and Barnabas took Mark with him, and sailed away unto Cyprus:
29
but Paul chose Silas, and went forth, being commended by the brethren to the grace of the Lord.
30
And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
31
And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek.
32
The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
33
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
34
And as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.
35
So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
36
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;
37
and when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;
38
and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
39
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
40
And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel unto them.
41
Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;

And it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper districts, came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples,
2
he said to them, Did ye receive [the] Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they [said] to him, We did not even hear if [the] Holy Spirit was [come].
3
And he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John.
4
And Paul said, John indeed baptised [with] the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him that was coming after him, that is, on Jesus.
5
And when they heard that, they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus.
6
And Paul having laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
7
And all the men were about twelve.
8
And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly during three months, reasoning and persuading [the things] concerning the kingdom ofGod.
9
But when some were hardened and disbelieved, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
10
And this took place for two years, so that all that inhabited Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
11
AndGod wrought no ordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
12
so that even napkins or aprons were brought from his body [and put] upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and the wicked spirits went out.
13
And certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches.
14
And there were certain [men], seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this.
15
But the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but ye, who are ye?
16
And the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, and having mastered both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17
And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who inhabited Ephesus, and fear fell upon all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18
And many of those that believed came confessing and declaring their deeds.
19
And many of those that practised curious arts brought their books [of charms] and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20
Thus with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed.
21
And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there I must see Rome also.
22
And having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timotheus and Erastus, he remained himself awhile in Asia.
23
And there took place at that time no small disturbance about the way.
24
For a certain [man] by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans;
25
whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work,
26
and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are nogods which are made with hands.
27
Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the greatgoddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres.
28
And having heard [this], and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians.
29
And the [whole] city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with [them] Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul.
30
But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not;
31
and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre.
32
Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together.
33
But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people.
34
But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians.
35
And the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the [image] which fell down from heaven?
36
These things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong.
37
For ye have brought these men, [who are] neither temple-plunderers, nor speak injuriously of yourgoddess.
38
If therefore Demetrius and the artisans who [are] with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.
39
But if ye inquire anything concerning other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40
For also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this [affair] of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse.
41
And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

Hoc autem factum est per biennium, ita ut omnes, qui habitabant in Asia, audirent verbum Domini, Iudæi atque Gentiles.

Virtutesque non quaslibet faciebat Deus per manum Pauli:
12
ita ut etiam super languidos deferrentur a corpore eius sudaria, et semicinctia, et recedebant ab eis languores, et spiritus nequam egrediebantur.
13
Tentaverunt autem quidam et de circumeuntibus Iudæis exorcistis, invocare super eos, qui habebant spiritus malos, nomen Domini Iesu, dicentes: Adiuro vos per Iesum, quem Paulus prædicat.
14
Erant autem quidam Iudæi Scevæ principis sacerdotum septem filii, qui hoc faciebant.
15
Respondens autem spiritus nequam dixit eis: Iesum novi, et Paulum scio: vos autem qui estis?
16
Et insiliens in eos homo, in quo erat dæmonium pessimum, et dominatus amborum, invaluit contra eos, ita ut nudi, et vulnerati effugerent de domo illa.
17
Hoc autem notum factum est omnibus Iudæis, atque Gentilibus, qui habitabant Ephesi: et cecidit timor super omnes illos, et magnificabatur nomen Domini Iesu.
18
Multique credentium veniebant, confitentes, et annunciantes actus suos.
19
Multi autem ex eis, qui fuerant curiosa sectati, contulerunt libros, et combusserunt coram omnibus: et computatis pretiis illorum, invenerunt pecuniam denariorum quinquaginta millium.
20
Ita fortiter crescebat verbum Dei, et confirmabatur.
21
His autem expletis, proposuit Paulus in Spiritu, transita Macedonia et Achaia ire Ierosolymam, dicens: quoniam postquam fuero ibi, oportet me et Romam videre.
22
Mittens autem in Macedoniam duos ex ministrantibus sibi, Timotheum, et Erastum, ipse remansit ad tempus in Asia.
23
Facta est autem illo tempore turbatio non minima de via Domini.
24
Demetrius enim quidam nomine, argentarius, faciens ædes argenteas Dianæ, præstabat artificibus non modicum quæstum:
25
quos convocans, et eos, qui huiusmodi erant opifices, dixit: Viri, scitis quia de hoc artificio est nobis acquisitio:
26
et videtis, et auditis quia non solum Ephesi, sed pene totius Asiæ, Paulus hic suadens avertit multam turbam, dicens: Quoniam non sunt dii, qui manibus fiunt.

Non solum autem hæc periclitabitur nobis pars in redargutionem venire, sed et magnæ Dianæ templum in nihilum reputabitur, sed et destrui incipiet maiestas eius, quam tota Asia, et orbis colit.

De turba autem detraxerunt Alexandrum, propellentibus eum Iudæis. Alexander autem manu silentio postulato, volebat reddere rationem populo.

Quem ut cognoverunt Iudæum esse, vox facta una est omnium, quasi per horas duas clamantium: Magna Diana Ephesiorum.

Et cum sedasset scriba turbas, dixit: Viri Ephesii, quis enim est hominum, qui nesciat Ephesiorum civitatem cultricem esse magnæ Dianæ, Iovisque prolis?

Cum ergo his contradici non possit, oportet vos sedatos esse, et nihil temere agere.
37
Adduxistis enim homines istos, neque sacrilegos, neque blasphemantes deam vestram.

Quod si Demetrius, et qui cum eo sunt artifices, habent adversus aliquem causam, conventus forenses aguntur, et proconsules sunt, accusent invicem.

Si quid autem alterius rei quæritis: in legitima Ecclesia poterit absolvi.

There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.

The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”

The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds.

So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.

Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,

whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.

You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.
27
Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
28
When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29
The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.
30
When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.
31
Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.
32
Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.
33
They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
34
But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35
When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
36
Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.
37
For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.
38
If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
39
But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40
For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”
41
When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

And it came to pass, in Apollos' being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,

he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive--having believed?' and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;'

and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, `To John's baptism.'

And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,

many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,

And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying--`After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;'

and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him--Timotheus and Erastus--he himself stayed a time in Asia.

And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,

for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,
25
whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;
26
and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;
27
and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great <FI>is<Fi> the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

And on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.

Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander--the Jews thrusting him forward--and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great <FI>is<Fi> the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

`For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;

if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court <FI>days<Fi> are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

`And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;
40
for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'
