Acts Chapter 16

6 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; to whom also he bare witness and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who shall do all my will.

7 Of this man’s seed hath God according to promise brought unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus;

8 when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

9 And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, What suppose ye that I am? I am not

10 he. But behold, there cometh one after me the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose.

11 Brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us is the word of this salvation sent forth.

12 For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled

13 them by condemning

14 him.

15 And though they found no cause of death

16 in him, yet asked they of Pilate that he should be slain.

17 And when they had fulfilled all things that were written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb.

18 But God raised him from the dead:

19 and he was seen for many days of them that came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses unto the people.

20 And we bring you good tidings of the promise made unto the fathers,

21 that God hath fulfilled the same unto our children, in that he raised up Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

22 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he hath spoken on this wise, I will give you the holy and sure

23 blessings of David.

24 Because he saith also in another

25 psalm, Thou wilt not give thy Holy One to see corruption.

26 For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

27 but he whom God raised up saw no corruption.

28 Be it known unto you therefore, brethren, that through this man is proclaimed unto you remission of sins:

29 and by him every one that believeth is justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

30 Beware therefore, lest that come upon

31 you which is spoken in the prophets:

32 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish;

33 For I work a work in your days,

34 A work which ye shall in no wise believe, if one declare it unto you.

35 And as they went out, they besought that these words might be spoken to them the next sabbath.

36 Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

37 And the next sabbath almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God.

38 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed.

39 And Paul and Barnabas spake out boldly, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you. Seeing ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

1 And he came to Derbe and Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, by name Timotheus, son of a Jewish believing woman, but [the] father a Greek,

2 who had a [good] testimony of the brethren in Lystra and Iconium.

3 Him would Paul have go forth with him, and took [him and] circumcised him on account of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew his father that he was a Greek.

4 And as they passed through the cities they instructed them to observe the decrees determined on by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.

5 The assemblies therefore were confirmed in the faith, and increased in number every day.

6 And having passed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,

7 having come down to Mysia, they attempted to go to Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them;

8 and having passed by Mysia they descended to Troas.

9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a certain Macedonian man, standing and beseeching him, and saying, Pass over into Macedonia and help us.

10 And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go forth to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to announce to them the glad tidings.

11 Having sailed therefore away from Troas, we went in a straight course to Samothracia, and on the morrow to Neapolis,

12 and thence to Philippi, which is [the] first city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city certain days.

13 And on the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where it was the custom for prayer to be, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had assembled.

14 And a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshippedGod, heard; whose heart the Lord opened to attend to the things spoken by Paul.

15 And when she had been baptised and her house, she besought [us], saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide [there]. And she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass as we were going to prayer that a certain female slave, having a spirit of Python, met us, who brought much profit to her masters by prophesying.

17 She, having followed Paul and us, cried saying, These men are bondmen of the Most HighGod, who announce to you [the] way of salvation.

18 And this she did many days. And Paul, being distressed, turned, and said to the spirit, I enjoin thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out the same hour.

19 And her masters, seeing that the hope of their gains was gone, having seized Paul and Silas, dragged [them] into the market before the magistrates;

20 and having brought them up to the praetors, said, These men utterly trouble our city, being Jews,

21 and announce customs which it is not lawful for us to receive nor practise, being Romans.

22 And the crowd rose up too against them; and the praetors, having torn off their clothes, commanded to scourge [them].

23 And having laid many stripes upon them they cast [them] into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely;

24 who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and secured their feet to the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas, in praying, were praisingGod with singing, and the prisoners listened to them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison shook, and all the doors were immediately opened, and the bonds of all loosed.

27 And the jailor being awakened out of his sleep, and seeing the doors of the prison opened, having drawn a sword was going to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had fled.

28 But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here.

29 And having asked for lights, he rushed in, and, trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas.

30 And leading them out said, Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

32 And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, with all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed [them] from their stripes; and was baptised, he and all his straightway.

34 And having brought them into his house he laid the table [for them], and rejoiced with all his house, having believed inGod.

35 And when it was day, the praetors sent the lictors, saying, Let those men go.

36 And the jailor reported these words to Paul: The praetors have sent that ye may be let go. Now therefore go out and depart in peace.

37 But Paul said to them, Having beaten us publicly uncondemned, us who are Romans, they have cast us into prison, and now they thrust us out secretly? no, indeed, but let them come themselves and bring us out.

38 And the lictors reported these words to the praetors. And they were afraid when they heard they were Romans.

39 And they came and besought them, and having brought them out, asked them to go out of the city.

40 And having gone out of the prison, they came to Lydia; and having seen the brethren, they exhorted them and went away.

17 Following Paul and us, she cried out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us a way of salvation!”

18 She was doing this for many days. But Paul, becoming greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” It came out that very hour.

19 But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.

20 When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men, being Jews, are agitating our city

21 and advocate customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”

22 The multitude rose up together against them and the magistrates tore their clothes from them, then commanded them to be beaten with rods.

23 When they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.

24 Having received such a command, he threw them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.

25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosened.

27 The jailer, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, “Don’t harm yourself, for we are all here!”

29 He called for lights, sprang in, fell down trembling before Paul and Silas,

30 brought them out, and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

32 They spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all who were in his house.

33 He took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes, and was immediately baptized, he and all his household.

34 He brought them up into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly with all his household, having believed in God.

35 But when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, “Let those men go.”

36 The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”

37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”

38 The sergeants reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,

39 and they came and begged them. When they had brought them out, they asked them to depart from the city.

40 They went out of the prison and entered into Lydia’s house. When they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them, then departed.

6 and having gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,

7 having gone toward Mysia, they were trying to go on toward Bithynia, and the Spirit did not suffer them,

8 and having passed by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

9 And a vision through the night appeared to Paul--a certain man of Macedonia was standing, calling upon him, and saying, `Having passed through to Macedonia, help us;' --

10 and when he saw the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go forth to Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord hath called us to preach good news to them,

11 having set sail, therefore, from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, on the morrow also to Neapolis,

12 thence also to Philippi, which is a principal city of the part of Macedonia--a colony. And we were in this city abiding certain days,

13 on the sabbath-day also we went forth outside of the city, by a river, where there used to be prayer, and having sat down, we were speaking to the women who came together,

14 and a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was hearing, whose heart the Lord did open to attend to the things spoken by Paul;

15 and when she was baptized, and her household, she did call upon us, saying, `If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain;' and she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass in our going on to prayer, a certain maid, having a spirit of Python, did meet us, who brought much employment to her masters by soothsaying,

17 she having followed Paul and us, was crying, saying, `These men are servants of the Most High God, who declare to us a way of salvation;'

18 and this she was doing for many days, but Paul having been grieved, and having turned, said to the spirit, `I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come forth from her;' and it came forth the same hour.

19 And her masters having seen that the hope of their employment was gone, having caught Paul and Silas, drew <FI>them<Fi> to the market-place, unto the rulers,

20 and having brought them to the magistrates, they said, `These men do exceedingly trouble our city, being Jews;

21 and they proclaim customs that are not lawful for us to receive nor to do, being Romans.'

22 And the multitude rose up together against them, and the magistrates having torn their garments from them, were commanding to beat <FI>them<Fi> with rods,

23 many blows also having laid upon them, they cast them to prison, having given charge to the jailor to keep them safely,

24 who such a charge having received, did put them to the inner prison, and their feet made fast in the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were hearing them,

26 and suddenly a great earthquake came, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, opened also presently were all the doors, and of all--the bands were loosed;

27 and the jailor having come out of sleep, and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn a sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to be fled,

28 and Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, `Thou mayest not do thyself any harm, for we are all here.'

29 And, having asked for a light, he sprang in, and trembling he fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 and having brought them forth, said, `Sirs, what must I do--that I may be saved?'

31 and they said, `Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved--thou and thy house;'

32 and they spake to him the word of the Lord, and to all those in his household;

33 and having taken them, in that hour of the night, he did bathe <FI>them<Fi> from the blows, and was baptized, himself and all his presently,

34 having brought them also into his house, he set food before <FI>them<Fi> , and was glad with all the household, he having believed in God.

35 And day having come, the magistrates sent the rod-bearers, saying, `Let those men go;'

37 and Paul said to them, `Having beaten us publicly uncondemned--men, Romans being--they did cast <FI>us<Fi> to prison, and now privately do they cast us forth! why no! but having come themselves, let them bring us forth.'

38 And the rod-bearers told to the magistrates these sayings, and they were afraid, having heard that they are Romans,

39 and having come, they besought them, and having brought <FI>them<Fi> forth, they were asking <FI>them<Fi> to go forth from the city;

40 and they, having gone forth out of the prison, entered into <FI>the house of<Fi> Lydia, and having seen the brethren, they comforted them, and went forth.
