Acts Chapter 15

1 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And he did so. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

2 And he went out, and followed; and he knew not that it was true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw a vision.

3 And when they were past the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth into the city; which opened to them of its own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and straightway the angel departed from him.

4 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a truth, that the Lord hath sent forth his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

5 And when he had considered

6 the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying.

7 And when he knocked at the door of the gate, a maid came to answer, named Rhoda.

8 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for joy, but ran in, and told that Peter stood before the gate.

9 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she confidently affirmed that it was even so. And they said, It is his angel.

10 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.

11 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him forth out of the prison. And he said, Tell these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went to another place.

12 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

13 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and tarried there.

14 Now he was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: and they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, they asked for peace, because their country was fed from the king’s country.

15 And upon a set day Herod arrayed himself in royal apparel, and sat on the throne, and made an oration unto them.

16 And the people shouted,

17 saying, The voice of a god, and not of a man.

18 And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

19 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

20 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministration, taking with them John whose surname was Mark.

21 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was

22 there, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, and Symeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

23 And as they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

24 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

25 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

26 And when they were at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John as their attendant.

27 And when they had gone through the whole island unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-Jesus;

28 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. The same called unto him Barnabas and Saul, and sought to hear the word of God.

29 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn aside the proconsul from the faith.

30 But Saul, who is also

31 called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him,

32 and said, O full of all guile and all villany, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

33 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

34 Then the proconsul, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

35 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos, and came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem.

36 But they, passing through from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia; and they went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

37 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

38 And Paul stood up, and beckoning with the hand said,

39 Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, hearken:

40 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they sojourned in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm led he them forth out of it.

41 And for about the time of forty years as a nursing-father bare he them in the wilderness.

1 And certain persons, having come down from Judaea, taught the brethren, If ye shall not have been circumcised according to the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

2 A commotion therefore having taken place, and no small discussion on the part of Paul and Barnabas against them, they arranged that Paul and Barnabas, and certain others from amongst them, should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.

3 They therefore, having been set on their way by the assembly, passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, relating the conversion of [those of] the nations. And they caused great joy to all the brethren.

4 And being arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly, and the apostles, and the elders, and related all thatGod had wrought with them.

5 And some of those who were of the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, rose up from among [them], saying that they ought to circumcise them and enjoin them to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and the elders were gathered together to see about this matter.

7 And much discussion having taken place, Peter, standing up, said to them, Brethren, ye know that from the earliest daysGod amongst you chose that the nations by my mouth should hear the word of the glad tidings and believe.

8 And the heart-knowingGod bore them witness, giving [them] the Holy Spirit as to us also,

9 and put no difference between us and them, having purified their hearts by faith.

10 Now therefore why tempt yeGod, by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

11 But we believe that we shall be saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same manner as they also.

12 And all the multitude kept silence and listened to Barnabas and Paul relating all the signs and wonders whichGod had wrought among the nations by them.

13 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Brethren, listen to me:

14 Simon has related howGod first visited to take out of [the] nations a people for his name.

15 And with this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written:

16 After these things I will return, and will rebuild the tabernacle of David which is fallen, and will rebuild its ruins, and will set it up,

17 so that the residue of men may seek out the Lord, and all the nations on whom my name is invoked, saith [the] Lord, who does these things

18 known from eternity.

19 Wherefore I judge, not to trouble those who from the nations turn toGod;

20 but to write to them to abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.

21 For Moses, from generations of old, has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath.

22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and to the elders, with the whole assembly, to send chosen men from among them with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch, Judas called Barsabas and Silas, leading men among the brethren,

23 having by their hand written [thus]: The apostles, and the elders, and the brethren, to the brethren who are from among [the] nations at Antioch, and [in] Syria and Cilicia, greeting:

24 Inasmuch as we have heard that some who went out from amongst us have troubled you by words, upsetting your souls, [saying that ye must be circumcised and keep the law]; to whom we gave no commandment;

25 it seemed good to us, having arrived at a common judgment, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

26 men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

27 We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves also will tell you by word [of mouth] the same things.

28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:

29 to abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what is strangled, and from fornication; keeping yourselves from which ye will do well. Farewell.

30 They therefore, being let go, came to Antioch, and having gathered the multitude delivered to [them] the epistle.

31 And having read it, they rejoiced at the consolation.

32 And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with much discourse, and strengthened them.

33 And having passed some time [there], they were let go in peace from the brethren to those who sent them.

35 And Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and announcing the glad tidings, with many others also, of the word of the Lord.

36 But after certain days Paul said to Barnabas, Let us return now and visit the brethren in every city where we have announced the word of the Lord, [and see] how they are getting on.

37 And Barnabas proposed to take with [them] John also, called Mark;

38 but Paul thought it not well to take with them him who had abandoned them, [going back] from Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work.

39 There arose therefore very warm feeling, so that they separated from one another; and Barnabas taking Mark sailed away to Cyprus;

40 but Paul having chosen Silas went forth, committed by the brethren to the grace ofGod.

41 And he passed through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the assemblies.

1 Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can’t be saved.”

2 Therefore when Paul and Barnabas had no small discord and discussion with them, they appointed Paul, Barnabas, and some others of them to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.

3 They, being sent on their way by the assembly, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles. They caused great joy to all the brothers.

4 When they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly and the apostles and the elders, and they reported everything that God had done with them.

32 Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged the brothers with many words and strengthened them.

33 After they had spent some time there, they were dismissed in peace from the brothers to the apostles.

35 But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

36 After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s return now and visit our brothers in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, to see how they are doing.”

37 Barnabas planned to take John, who was called Mark, with them also.

38 But Paul didn’t think that it was a good idea to take with them someone who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia, and didn’t go with them to do the work.

39 Then the contention grew so sharp that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus,

40 but Paul chose Silas and went out, being commended by the brothers to the grace of God.

41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the assemblies.

1 And certain having come down from Judea, were teaching the brethren--`If ye be not circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye are not able to be saved;'

2 there having been, therefore, not a little dissension and disputation to Paul and Barnabas with them, they arranged for Paul and Barnabas, and certain others of them, to go up unto the apostles and elders to Jerusalem about this question,

3 they indeed, then, having been sent forward by the assembly, were passing through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the nations, and they were causing great joy to all the brethren.

12 And all the multitude did keep silence, and were hearkening to Barnabas and Paul, declaring as many signs and wonders as God did among the nations through them;

14 Simeon did declare how at first God did look after to take out of the nations a people for His name,

15 and to this agree the words of the prophets, as it hath been written:

16 After these things I will turn back, and I will build again the tabernacle of David, that is fallen down, and its ruins I will build again, and will set it upright--

17 that the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all the nations, upon whom My name hath been called, saith the Lord, who is doing all these things.

18 `Known from the ages to God are all His works;

19 wherefore I judge: not to trouble those who from the nations do turn back to God,

20 but to write to them to abstain from the pollutions of the idols, and the whoredom, and the strangled thing; and the blood;
