John Chapter 7

8 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

9 The Jews therefore strove one with another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

10 Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves.

11 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

12 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

13 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him.

14 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me.

15 This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread shall live for ever.

16 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

17 Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard

18 this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?

19 But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said unto them, Doth this cause you to stumble?

20 What then if ye should behold the Son of man ascending where he was before?

21 It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life.

22 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.

23 And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father.

24 Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

25 Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?

26 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

27 And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God.

28 Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil?

29 Now he spake of Judas

30 the son of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him,

31 being one of the twelve.

32 And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judæa, because the Jews sought to kill him.

33 Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.

34 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may behold thy works which thou doest.

35 For no man doeth anything in secret, and himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.

36 For even his brethren did not believe on him.

37 Jesus therefore saith unto them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.

38 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.

39 Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.

40 And having said these things unto them, he abode

41 still in Galilee.

42 But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.

43 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

44 And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray.

45 Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

46 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

47 The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

48 Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.

49 If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or

50 whether I speak from myself.

51 He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

52 Did not Moses give you the law, and

53 yet none of you doeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me?

14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

15 The Jews therefore wondered, saying, How knows this [man] letters, having never learned?

16 Jesus therefore answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine, but [that] of him that has sent me.

17 If any one desire to practise his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is ofGod, or [that] I speak from myself.

18 He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that has sent him, he is true, and unrighteousness is not in him.

19 Has not Moses given you the law, and no one of you practises the law? Why do ye seek to kill me?

20 The crowd answered [and said], Thou hast a demon: who seeks to kill thee?

21 Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder.

22 Therefore Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and ye circumcise a man on sabbath.

23 If a man receives circumcision on sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be violated, are ye angry with me because I have made a man entirely sound on sabbath?

24 Judge not according to sight, but judge righteous judgment.

25 Some therefore of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

26 and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ?

27 But [as to] this [man] we know whence he is. Now [as to] the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is.

28 Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know.

29 I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me.

30 They sought therefore to take him; and no one laid his hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.

31 But many of the crowd believed on him, and said, Will the Christ, when he comes, do more signs than those which this [man] has done?

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they might take him.

33 Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and I go to him that has sent me.

34 Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me], and where I am ye cannot come.

35 The Jews therefore said to one another, Where is he about to go that we shall not find him? Is he about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

36 What word is this which he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me]; and where I am ye cannot come?

37 In the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.

38 He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believed on him were about to receive; for [the] Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

40 [Some] out of the crowd therefore, having heard this word, said, This is truly the prophet.

41 Others said, This is the Christ. Others said, Does then the Christ come out of Galilee?

42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?

43 There was a division therefore in the crowd on account of him.

44 But some of them desired to take him, but no one laid hands upon him.

45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?

46 The officers answered, Never man spoke thus, as this man [speaks].

47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also deceived?

48 Has any one of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

49 But this crowd, which does not know the law, are accursed.

50 Nicodemus says to them (being one of themselves),

51 Does our law judge a man before it have first heard from himself, and know what he does?

52 They answered and said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look, that no prophet arises out of Galilee.

53 And every one went to his home.

13 Nemo tamen palam loquebatur de illo propter metum Iudæorum.

15 Et mirabantur Iudæi, dicentes: Quomodo hic litteras scit, cum non didicerit?

16 Respondit eis Iesus, et dixit: Mea doctrina non est mea, sed eius, qui misit me.

17 Si quis voluerit voluntatem eius facere: cognoscet de doctrina, utrum ex Deo sit, an ego a me ipso loquar.

18 Qui a semetipso loquitur, gloriam propriam quærit. qui autem quærit gloriam eius, qui misit eum, hic verax est, et iniustitia in illo non est.

19 Nonne Moyses dedit vobis legem: et nemo ex vobis facit legem?

20 Quid me quæritis interficere? Respondit turba, et dixit: Dæmonium habes: quis te quæret interficere?

21 Respondit Iesus, et dixit eis: Unum opus feci, et omnes miramini:

22 Propterea Moyses dedit vobis circumcisionem: (non quia ex Moyse est, sed ex patribus) et in sabbato circumciditis hominem.

23 Si circumcisionem accipit homo in sabbato, ut non solvatur lex Moysi: mihi indignamini quia totum hominem sanum feci in sabbato?

24 Nolite iudicare secundum faciem, sed iustum iudicium iudicate.

25 Dicebant ergo quidam ex Ierosolymis: Nonne hic est, quem quærunt interficere?

26 Et ecce palam loquitur, et nihil ei dicunt. Numquid vere cognoverunt principes quia hic est Christus?

27 Sed hunc scimus unde sit: Christus autem cum venerit, nemo scit unde sit.

28 Clamabat ergo Iesus in templo docens, et dicens: Et me scitis, et unde sim scitis: et a me ipso non veni, sed est verus, qui misit me, quem vos nescitis.

29 Ego scio eum: quia ab ipso sum, et ipse me misit.

30 Quærebant ergo eum apprehendere: et nemo misit in illum manus, quia nondum venerat hora eius.

31 De turba autem multi crediderunt in eum, et dicebant: Christus cum venerit, numquid plura signa faciet quam quæ hic facit?

32 Audierunt Pharisæi turbam murmurantem de illo hæc: et miserunt principes, et Pharisæi ministros ut apprehenderent eum.

33 Dixit ergo eis Iesus: Adhuc modicum tempus vobiscum sum: et vado ad eum, qui me misit.

1 After these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he wouldn’t walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was at hand.

25 Therefore some of them of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this he whom they seek to kill?

26 Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Christ?

27 However, we know where this man comes from, but when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

28 Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.

29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

30 They sought therefore to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

31 But of the multitude, many believed in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, he won’t do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?”

32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.

33 Then Jesus said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me.

34 You will seek me and won’t find me. You can’t come where I am.”

35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

36 What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me;’ and ‘Where I am, you can’t come’?”

37 Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!

38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”

39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

40 Many of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.”

41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “What, does the Christ come out of Galilee?

42 Hasn’t the Scripture said that the Christ comes of the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

43 So a division arose in the multitude because of him.

44 Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him.

45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him?”

46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”

47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, “You aren’t also led astray, are you?

48 Have any of the rulers or any of the Pharisees believed in him?

49 But this multitude that doesn’t know the law is cursed.”

50 Nicodemus (he who came to him by night, being one of them) said to them,

51 “Does our law judge a man unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?”

52 They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

35 ειπον ουν οι ιουδαιοι προς εαυτους που ουτος μελλει πορευεσθαι οτι ημεις ουχ ευρησομεν αυτον μη εις την διασποραν των ελληνων μελλει πορευεσθαι και διδασκειν τους ελληνας

36 τις εστιν ο λογος ουτος ον ειπεν ζητησετε με και ουχ ευρησετε με και οπου ειμι εγω υμεις ου δυνασθε ελθειν

37 εν δε τη εσχατη ημερα τη μεγαλη της εορτης ιστηκει ο ιησους και εκραξεν λεγων εαν τις διψα ερχεσθω προς με και πινετω

1 And Jesus was walking after these things in Galilee, for he did not wish to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him,

2 and the feast of the Jews was nigh--that of tabernacles--

3 his brethren, therefore, said unto him, `Remove hence, and go away to Judea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works that thou dost;

4 for no one in secret doth anything, and himself seeketh to be in public; if thou dost these things--manifest thyself to the world;'

5 for not even were his brethren believing in him.

6 Jesus, therefore, saith to them, `My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready;

12 and there was much murmuring about him among the multitudes, some indeed said--`He is good;' and others said, `No, but he leadeth astray the multitude;'

13 no one, however, was speaking freely about him, through fear of the Jews.

14 And it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple, and he was teaching,

15 and the Jews were wondering, saying, `How hath this one known letters--not having learned?'

16 Jesus answered them and said, `My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me;

17 if any one may will to do His will, he shall know concerning the teaching, whether it is of God, or--I do speak from myself.

18 `He who is speaking from himself his own glory doth seek, but he who is seeking the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and unrighteousness is not in him;

19 hath not Moses given you the law? and none of you doth the law; why me do ye seek to kill?'

20 The multitude answered and said, `Thou hast a demon, who doth seek to kill thee?'

21 Jesus answered and said to them, `One work I did, and ye all wonder,

22 because of this, Moses hath given you the circumcision--not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers--and on a sabbath ye circumcise a man;

23 if a man doth receive circumcision on a sabbath that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye wroth with me that I made a man all whole on a sabbath?

24 judge not according to appearance, but the righteous judgment judge.'

25 Certain, therefore, of the Jerusalemites said, `Is not this he whom they are seeking to kill?

26 and, lo, he doth speak freely, and they say nothing to him; did the rulers at all know truly that this is truly the Christ?

27 but this one--we have known whence he is; and the Christ, when he doth come, no one doth know whence he is.'

28 Jesus cried, therefore, in the temple, teaching and saying, `Ye have both known me, and ye have known whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but He who sent me is true, whom ye have not known;

29 and I have known Him, because I am from Him, and He did send me.'

30 They were seeking, therefore, to seize him, and no one laid the hand on him, because his hour had not yet come,

31 and many out of the multitude did believe in him, and said--`The Christ--when he may come--will he do more signs than these that this one did?'

32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they may take him;

33 Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Yet a little time I am with you, and I go away unto Him who sent me;

34 ye will seek me, and ye shall not find; and where I am, ye are not able to come.'

35 The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, `Whither is this one about to go that we shall not find him? --to the dispersion of the Greeks is he about to go? and to teach the Greeks;

36 what is this word that he said, Ye will seek me, and ye shall not find? and, Where I am, ye are not able to come?'

37 And in the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, `If any one doth thirst, let him come unto me and drink;
