1
And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord
2
(as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),
3
and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
4
And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
5
And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
6
And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law,
7
then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
8
Now lettest thou thy servant depart, Lord,
9
According to thy word, in peace;
10
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
11
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples;
12
A light for revelation to the Gentiles,
13
And the glory of thy people Israel.
14
And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him;
15
and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this
16
child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against;
17
yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.
18
And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,
19
and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day.
20
And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spake of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
21
And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
22
And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
23
And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.
24
And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast;
25
and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not;
26
but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance:
27
and when they found him not, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him.
28
And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions:
29
and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
30
And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing.
31
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father’s house?
32
And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
33
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all
34
these sayings in her heart.
35
And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

And he came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching [the] baptism of repentance for [the] remission of sins,

5
Every gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked [places] shall become a straight [path], and the rough places smooth ways,
6
and all flesh shall see the salvation ofGod.
7
He said therefore to the crowds which went out to be baptised by him, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8
Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say in yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father, for I say unto you thatGod is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9
And already also the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into [the] fire.
10
And the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then?
11
And he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.
12
And tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do?
13
And he said to them, Take no more [money] than what is appointed to you.
14
And persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay.
15
But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ,
16
John answered all, saying, I indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; he shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;
17
whose winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18
Exhorting then many other things also he announced [his] glad tidings to the people.

But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him as to Herodias, the wife of his brother, and as to all the wicked things which Herod had done,

2
sub principibus sacerdotum Anna, et Caipha: factum est verbum Domini super Ioannem, Zachariæ filium, in deserto.
3
Et venit in omnem regionem Iordanis, prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum,
4
sicut scriptum est in Libro sermonum Isaiæ prophetæ: Vox clamantis in deserto: Parate viam Domini: rectas facite semitas eius:
5
omnis vallis implebitur: et omnis mons, et collis humiliabitur: et erunt prava in directa: et aspera in vias planas:
6
et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei.
7
16
respondit Ioannes, dicens omnibus: Ego quidem aqua baptizo vos: veniet autem fortior me, cuius non sum dignus solvere corigiam calceamentorum eius: ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu sancto, et igni:
17
22
et descendit Spiritus sanctus corporali specie sicut columba in ipsum: et vox de cælo facta est: Tu es filius meus dilectus, in te complacui mihi.
23

2
during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3
He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
4
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.
5
Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6

7
He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8
Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
9
Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10
The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
11
He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
12
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
13
He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14
Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
15
As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16
John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
17
His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18
Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,
19
but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,
20
added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
21
Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized and was praying. The sky was opened,
22
and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.”

And in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar--Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene--
2
Annas and Caiaphas being chief priests--there came a word of God unto John the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness,
3
and he came to all the region round the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation--to remission of sins,
4
as it hath been written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, `A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths;
5
every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straightness, and the rough become smooth ways;
6
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'
7
Then said he to the multitudes coming forth to be baptised by him, `Brood of vipers! who did prompt you to flee from the coming wrath?
8
make, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have a father--Abraham; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham;
9
and already also the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut down, and to fire it is cast.'
10
And the multitudes were questioning him, saying, `What, then, shall we do?'
11
and he answering saith to them, `He having two coats--let him impart to him having none, and he having victuals--in like manner let him do.'
12
And there came also tax-gatherers to be baptised, and they said unto him, `Teacher, what shall we do?'
13
and he said unto them, `Exact no more than that directed you.'
14
And questioning him also were those warring, saying, `And we, what shall we do?' and he said unto them, `Do violence to no one, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.'
15
And the people are looking forward, and all are reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether or not he may be the Christ;
16
John answered, saying to all, `I indeed with water do baptise you, but he cometh who is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to loose the latchet of his sandals--he shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire;
17
whose winnowing shovel <FI>is<Fi> in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat to his storehouse, and the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'
18
And, therefore, indeed with many other things, exhorting, he was proclaiming good news to the people,
19
and Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, and concerning all the evils that Herod did,
20
added also this to all, that he shut up John in the prison.
21
And it came to pass, in all the people being baptised, Jesus also being baptised, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22
and the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily appearance, as if a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, `Thou art My Son--the Beloved, in thee I did delight.'
