2 On their hands they shall bear thee up,
3 Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.
4 Jesus said unto him, Again it is written, Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God.
5 Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
6 and he said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
7 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
8 Then the devil leaveth him; and behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
9 Now when he heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee;
10 and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali:
11 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
12 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
13 Toward the sea, beyond the Jordan,
14 Galilee of the Gentiles,
15 The people that sat in darkness
16 Saw a great light,
17 And to them that sat in the region and shadow of death,
18 To them did light spring up.
19 From that time began Jesus to preach, and to say, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
20 And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers.
21 And he saith unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you fishers of men.
22 And they straightway left the nets, and followed him.
23 And going on from thence he saw two other brethren, James the
24 son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
25 And they straightway left the boat and their father, and followed him.
26 And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people.
27 And the report of him went forth into all Syria: and they brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, possessed with demons, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them.
28 And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judæa and
29 from beyond the Jordan.
30 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him:
31 and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
32 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
33 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
34 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
35 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
36 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
37 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
38 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.
39 Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
40 Blessed are ye when
41 men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
42 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.
43 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.
44 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.
45 Neither do
46 men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house.
47 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
48 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men.
14 Ye are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid.
15 Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
16 Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.
17 Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass.
19 Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.
20 For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
21 Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment.
22 But I say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire.
23 If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee,
24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
28 But I say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.
31 It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.
32 But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn.
34 But I say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne ofGod;
35 nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil.
38 Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.
39 But I say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;
40 and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also.
41 And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.
42 To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away.
43 Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you,
45 that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust.
46 For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same?
47 And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same?
48 Be ye therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

17 Nolite putare quoniam veni solvere legem, aut prophetas: non veni solvere, sed adimplere.
18 Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat cælum et terra, iota unum, aut unus apex non præteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant.
19 Qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis istis minimis, et docuerit sic homines, minimus vocabitur in regno cælorum: qui autem fecerit et docuerit, hic magnus vocabitur in regno cælorum.
20 Dico enim vobis, quia nisi abundaverit iustitia vestra plus quam Scribarum, et Pharisæorum, non intrabitis in regnum cælorum.
21 Audistis quia dictum est antiquis: Non occides: qui autem occiderit, reus erit iudicio.
22 Ego autem dico vobis: quia omnis qui irascitur fratri suo, reus erit iudicio. Qui autem dixerit fratri suo, raca: reus erit concilio. Qui autem dixerit, fatue: reus erit gehennæ ignis.
23 Si ergo offers munus tuum ad altare, et ibi recordatus fueris quia frater tuus habet aliquid adversum te:
24 relinque ibi munus tuum ante altare, et vade prius reconciliari fratri tuo: et tunc veniens offeres munus tuum.
25 Esto consentiens adversario tuo cito dum es in via cum eo: ne forte tradat te adversarius iudici, et iudex tradat te ministro: et in carcerem mittaris.
26 Amen dico tibi, non exies inde, donec reddas novissimum quadrantem.
27 Audistis quia dictum est antiquis: Non mœchaberis.
28 Ego autem dico vobis: quia omnis, qui viderit mulierem ad concupiscendum eam, iam mœchatus est eam in corde suo.
29 Quod si oculus tuus dexter scandalizat te, erue eum, et proiice abs te: expedit enim tibi ut pereat unum membrorum tuorum, quam totus corpus tuum mittatur in gehennam.
30 Et si dextra manus tua scandalizat te, abscide eam, et proiice abs te: expedit enim tibi ut pereat unum membrorum tuorum, quam totum corpus tuum eat in gehennam.
31 Dictum est autem: Quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, det ei libellum repudii.
32 Ego autem dico vobis: Quia omnis, qui dimiserit uxorem suam, excepta fornicationis causa, facit eam mœchari: et qui dimissam duxerit, adulterat.
33 Iterum audistis quia dictum est antiquis: Non periurabis: reddes autem Domino iuramenta tua.
34 Ego autem dico vobis, non iurare omnino, neque per cælum, quia thronus Dei est:
35 neque per terram, quia scabellum est pedum eius: neque per Ierosolymam, quia civitas est magni regis:
36 neque per caput tuum iuraveris, quia non potes unum capillum album facere, aut nigrum.
37 Sit autem sermo vester, est, est: non, non: quod autem his abundantius est, a malo est.

39 Ego autem dico vobis, non resistere malo: sed si quis te percusserit in dexteram maxillam tuam, præbe illi et alteram:

41 et quicumque te angariaverit mille passus, vade cum illo et alia duo.

43 Audistis quia dictum est: Diliges proximum tuum, et odio habebis inimicum tuum.
44 Ego autem dico vobis: Diligite inimicos vestros, benefacite his, qui oderunt vos: et orate pro persequentibus et calumniantibus vos:
45 ut sitis filii patris vestri, qui in cælis est: qui solem suum oriri facit super bonos, et malos: et pluit super iustos et iniustos.
46 Si enim diligitis eos, qui vos diligunt, quam mercedem habebitis? nonne et publicani hoc faciunt?
47 Et si salutaveritis fratres vestros tantum, quid amplius facitis? nonne et ethnici hoc faciunt?
48 Estote ergo vos perfecti, sicut et pater vester cælestis perfectus est.

21 “You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not murder;’ and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
22 But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.
23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,
24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 Agree with your adversary quickly while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.
26 Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’
28 but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’
32 but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,’
34 but I tell you, don’t swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black.
37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
39 But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.
41 Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to him who asks you, and don’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?
47 If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

22 εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πας ο οργιζομενος τω αδελφω αυτου ενοχος εσται τη κρισει ος δ αν ειπη τω αδελφω αυτου ρακα ενοχος εσται τω συνεδριω ος δ αν ειπη μωρε ενοχος εσται εις την γεενναν του πυρος
23 εαν ουν προσφερης το δωρον σου επι το θυσιαστηριον κακει μνησθης οτι ο αδελφος σου εχει τι κατα σου
24 αφες εκει το δωρον σου εμπροσθεν του θυσιαστηριου και υπαγε πρωτον διαλλαγηθι τω αδελφω σου και τοτε ελθων προσφερε το δωρον σου
25 ισθι ευνοων τω αντιδικω σου ταχυ εως οτου ει μετ αυτου εν τη οδω μηποτε σε παραδω ο αντιδικος τω κριτη και ο κριτης τω υπηρετη και εις φυλακην βληθηση
26 αμην λεγω σοι ου μη εξελθης εκειθεν εως αν αποδως τον εσχατον κοδραντην
27 ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη ου μοιχευσεις
28 εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πας ο βλεπων γυναικα προς το επιθυμησαι [αυτην] ηδη εμοιχευσεν αυτην εν τη καρδια αυτου

32 εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πας ο απολυων την γυναικα αυτου παρεκτος λογου πορνειας ποιει αυτην μοιχευθηναι [και ος εαν απολελυμενην γαμηση μοιχαται]
33 παλιν ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη τοις αρχαιοις ουκ επιορκησεις αποδωσεις δε τω κυριω τους ορκους σου
34 εγω δε λεγω υμιν μη ομοσαι ολως μητε εν τω ουρανω οτι θρονος εστιν του θεου

3 `Happy the poor in spirit--because theirs is the reign of the heavens.

23 `If, therefore, thou mayest bring thy gift to the altar, and there mayest remember that thy brother hath anything against thee,
24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go--first be reconciled to thy brother, and then having come bring thy gift.
25 `Be agreeing with thy opponent quickly, while thou art in the way with him, that the opponent may not deliver thee to the judge, and the judge may deliver thee to the officer, and to prison thou mayest be cast,
26 verily I say to thee, thou mayest not come forth thence till that thou mayest pay the last farthing.

28 but I--I say to you, that every one who is looking on a woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart.
