1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
2 Avenge the children of Israel upon the Midianites; afterwards shalt thou be gathered unto thy peoples.
3 And Moses spoke to the people, saying, Arm from amongst you men for military service, that they go against Midian to execute Jehovah's vengeance upon Midian.
4 Of every tribe a thousand, of all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
5 And there were levied out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand by tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand by the tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, and the holy instruments, even the alarm-trumpets in his hand.
7 And they warred against Midian, as Jehovah had commanded Moses, and slew all the males.
8 And they slew the kings of Midian, besides the others slain, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and Balaam the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
9 And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took for a spoil all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods;
10 and all their cities in their settlements and all their encampments they burned with fire.
11 And they took all the booty, and all the prey, of man and of cattle;
12 and they brought to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the assembly of the children of Israel, the captives and the prey and the booty, to the camp in the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan of Jericho.
13 And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the princes of the assembly went forth to meet them outside the camp.
14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the army, with the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war;
15 and Moses said to them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
16 Lo, these, through the counsel of Balaam, caused the children of Israel to commit sin against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague on the assembly of Jehovah.
17 And now slay every male among the little ones, and slay every woman that hath known man by lying with him,
18 but all the children among the women that have not known lying with a man, keep alive for yourselves.
19 And encamp outside the camp seven days; whoever hath killed a person, and whoever hath touched any slain; ye shall purify yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day, you and your captives.
20 And every garment, and every vessel of skin, and all work of goat's hair, and every utensil of wood shall ye purify.
21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war that had gone to the battle, This is the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
22 Only the gold, and the silver, the copper, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23 everything that passeth through the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean; only it shall be purified with the water of separation; and everything that cannot pass through the fire ye shall make go through the water.
24 And ye shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean; and afterwards ye may come into the camp.
25 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
26 Take the sum of the prey that was taken, of man and of cattle, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the assembly;
27 and divide the prey into halves, between them that conducted the war, who went out to the battle, and the whole assembly.
28 And thou shalt levy a tribute for Jehovah of the men of war who went out to the army, one soul of five hundred of the persons, and of the oxen, and of the asses, and of the small cattle.
29 Of their half shall ye take it, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for a heave-offering of Jehovah.
30 And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the small cattle, of every [kind of] beasts, and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, who keep the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.
31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
32 And the prey, the rest of the spoil, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,
33 and seventy-two thousand oxen,
34 and sixty-one thousand asses,
35 and of human persons, of the women that had not known lying with a man, all the persons were thirty-two thousand.
36 And the half, the portion of them that had gone out to the war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
37 and the tribute for Jehovah of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five;
38 and the oxen were thirty-six thousand, and the tribute thereof for Jehovah, seventy-two;
39 and the asses were thirty thousand five hundred, and the tribute thereof for Jehovah, sixty-one;
40 and the human persons were sixteen thousand, of whom the tribute for Jehovah was thirty-two persons.
41 And Moses gave the tribute of Jehovah's heave-offering to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
42 And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses had divided, [taking it] from the men that served in the war,
43 (now the half belonging to the assembly was of the sheep, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred,
44 and thirty-six thousand oxen,
45 and thirty thousand five hundred asses,
46 and sixteen thousand human persons,)
47 ...of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, of man and of cattle, and gave them to the Levites who kept the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah; as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
48 And the officers who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses,
49 and they said to Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war who were under our hand, and there is not one man of us lacking.
50 So we present the offering of Jehovah, that which each one hath found, jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Jehovah.
51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, all manner of wrought jewels.
52 And all the gold of the heave-offering that they offered to Jehovah was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds.
53 (The men of war had taken spoil each one for himself.)
54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, as a memorial for the children of Israel before Jehovah.

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
2 Avenge the wrongs of the children of Israel on the Madianites, and afterwards thou shalt be added to thy people.
3 And Moses spoke to the people, saying, Arm some of you, and set yourselves in array before the Lord against Madian, to inflict vengeance on Madian from the Lord.
4 Send a thousand of each tribe from all the tribes of the children of Israel to set themselves in array.
5 And they numbered of the thousands of Israel a thousand of [each] tribe, twelve thousands; [these were] armed for war.
6 And Moses sent them away a thousand of every tribe with their forces, and Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest: and the holy instruments, and the signal trumpets [were] in their hands.
7 And they set themselves in array against Madian, as the Lord commanded Moses; and they slew every male.
8 And they slew the kings of Madian together with their slain [subjects]; even Evi and Rocon, and Sur, and Ur, and Roboc, five kings of Madian; and they slew with the sword Balaam the son of Beor with their [other] slain.
9 And they made a prey of the women of Madian, and their store, and their cattle, and all their possessions: and they spoiled their forces.
10 And they burnt with fire all their cities in the places of their habitation, and they burnt their villages with fire.
11 And they took all their plunder, and all their spoils, both man and beast.
12 And they brought to Moses and to Eleazar the priest, and to all the children of Israel, the captives, and the spoils, and the plunder, to the camp to Araboth Moab, which is at Jordan by Jericho.
13 And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the rulers of the synagogue went forth out of the camp to meet them.
14 And Moses was angry with the captains of the host, the heads of thousands and the heads of hundreds who came from the battle-array.
15 And Moses said to them, Why have ye saved every female alive?
16 For they were [the occasion] to the children of Israel by the word of Balaam of their revolting and despising the word of the Lord, because of Phogor; and there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord.
17 Now then slay every male in all the spoil, slay every woman, who has known the lying with man.
18 And as for all the captivity of women, who have not known the lying with man, save ye them alive.
19 And ye shall encamp outside the [great] camp seven days; every one who has slain and who touches a dead body, shall be purified on the third day, and ye and your captivity [shall purify yourselves] on the seventh day.
20 And ye shall purify every garment and every leathern utensil, and all furniture of goat skin, and every wooden vessel.
21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of the host that came from the battle-array, This [is] the ordinance of the law which the Lord has commanded Moses.
22 Beside the gold, and the silver, and the brass, and the iron, and lead, and tin,
23 every thing that shall pass through the fire shall so be clean, nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of sanctification; and whatsoever will not pass through the fire shall pass through water.
24 And on the seventh day ye shall wash your garments, and be clean; and afterwards ye shall come into the camp.
25 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
26 Take the sum of the spoils of the captivity both of man and beast, thou and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the families of the congregation.
27 And ye shall divide the spoils between the warriors that went out to battle, and the whole congregation.
28 And ye shall take a tribute for the Lord from the warriors that went out to battle; one soul out of five hundred, from the men, and from the cattle, even from the oxen, and from the sheep, and from the asses; and ye shall take from their half.
29 And thou shalt give [them] to Eleazar the priest [as] the first-fruits of the Lord.
30 And from the half belonging to the children of Israel thou shalt take one in fifty from the men, and from the oxen, and from the sheep, and from the asses, and from all the cattle; and thou shalt give them to the Levites that keep the charges in the tabernacle of the Lord.
31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
32 And that which remained of the spoil which the warriors took, was—of the sheep, six hundred and seventy-five thousand:
33 and oxen, seventy-two thousand:
34 and asses, sixty-one thousand.
35 And persons of women who had not known lying with man, all the souls, thirty-two thousand.
36 And the half, [even] the portion of them that went out to war, from the number of the sheep, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.
37 And the tribute to the Lord from the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.
38 And the oxen, six and thirty thousand, and the tribute to the Lord, seventy-two.
39 And asses, thirty thousand and five hundred, and the tribute to the Lord, sixty-one:
40 and the persons, sixteen thousand, and the tribute of them to the Lord, thirty-two souls.
41 And Moses gave the tribute to the Lord, the heave-offering of God, to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses;
42 from the half belonging to the children of Israel, whom Moses separated from the men of war.
43 And the half [taken] from the sheep, belonging to the congregation, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.
44 And the oxen, thirty-six thousand;
45 asses, thirty thousand and five hundred;
46 and persons, sixteen thousand.
47 And Moses took of the half belonging to the children of Israel the fiftieth part, of men and of cattle, and he gave them to the Levites who keep the charges of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
48 And all those who were appointed to be officers of thousands of the host, captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, approached Moses, and said to Moses,
49 Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war with us, and not one is missing.
50 And we have brought our gift to the Lord, [every] man who has found an article of gold, whether an armlet, or a chain, or a ring, or a bracelet, or a clasp for hair, to make atonement for us before the Lord.
51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, even every wrought article.
52 And all the wrought gold, even the offering that they offered to the Lord, was sixteen thousand and seven hundred and fifty shekels from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds.
53 For the men of war took plunder every one for himself.
54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and brought the vessels into the tabernacle of witness, a memorial of the children of Israel before the Lord.

15 ait: Cur feminas reservastis?
33 boum septuaginta duo millia,
34 asinorum sexaginta millia et mille:
35 animæ hominum sexus feminei, quæ non cognoverant viros, triginta duo millia.
36 Dataque est media pars his, qui in prælio fuerant, ovium trecenta triginta septem millia quingentæ:
37 e quibus in partem Domini supputatæ sunt oves sexcentæ septuaginta quinque.
40 de animabus hominum sedecim millibus, cesserunt in partem Domini triginta duæ animæ.
41 Tradiditque Moyses numerum primitiarum Domini Eleazaro sacerdoti, sicut fuerat ei imperatum,
52 pondo sedecim millia, septingentos quinquaginta siclos a tribunis et centurionibus.

21 Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses.
22 However the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23 everything that may withstand the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity. All that doesn’t withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water.
24 You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. Afterward you shall come into the camp.”
25 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
26 “Count the plunder that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation;
27 and divide the plunder into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.
28 Levy a tribute to the LORD of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks.
29 Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for the LORD’s wave offering.
30 Of the children of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites, who perform the duty of the LORD’s tabernacle.”
31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
32 Now the plunder, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him.
36 The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;
37 and the LORD’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five.
38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD’s tribute was seventy-two.
39 The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD’s tribute was sixty-one.
40 The persons were sixteen thousand, of whom the LORD’s tribute was thirty-two persons.
41 Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD’s wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.
42 Of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided off from the men who fought
43 (now the congregation’s half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
46 and sixteen thousand persons),
47 even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of the LORD’s tabernacle, as the LORD commanded Moses.
48 The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses.
49 They said to Moses, “Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us.
50 We have brought the LORD’s offering, what every man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before the LORD.”
51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took their gold, even all worked jewels.
52 All the gold of the wave offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels.
53 The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.
54 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting for a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.

1 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
2 `Execute the vengeance of the sons of Israel against the Midianites--afterwards thou art gathered unto thy people.'
3 And Moses speaketh unto the people, saying, `Be ye armed some of you for the host, and they are against Midian, to put the vengeance of Jehovah on Midian;
4 a thousand for a tribe--a thousand for a tribe, to all the tribes of Israel--ye do send to the host.'
5 And there are given out of the thousands of Israel a thousand for a tribe, twelve thousand armed ones of the host;
6 and Moses sendeth them, a thousand for a tribe, to the host, them and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, to the host; and the holy vessels, and the trumpets of the shouting, in his hand.
7 And they war against Midian, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses, and slay every male;
8 and the kings of Midian they have slain, besides their pierced ones, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor, they have slain with the sword.
9 And the sons of Israel take captive the women of Midian, and their infants; and all their cattle, and all their substance, and all their wealth they have plundered;
10 and all their cities, with their habitations, and all their towers, they have burnt with fire.
11 And they take all the spoil, and all the prey, among man and among beast;
12 and they bring in, unto Moses, and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the company of the sons of Israel, the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto the camp, unto the plains of Moab, which <FI>are<Fi> by Jordan, <FI>near<Fi> Jericho.
13 And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the company, go out to meet them, unto the outside of the camp,
14 and Moses is wroth against the inspectors of the force, chiefs of the thousands, and chiefs of the hundreds, who are coming in from the host of the battle.
15 And Moses saith unto them, `Have ye kept alive every female?
16 lo, they--they have been to the sons of Israel, through the word of Balaam, to cause a trespass against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and the plague is in the company of Jehovah.
17 `And now, slay ye every male among the infants, yea, every woman known of man by the lying of a male ye have slain;
18 and all the infants among the women, who have not known the lying of a male, ye have kept alive for yourselves.
19 `And ye, encamp ye at the outside of the camp seven days--any who hath slain a person, and any who hath come against a pierced one, ye cleanse yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day--ye and your captives;
20 and every garment, and every skin vessel, and every work of goats' <FI>hair<Fi> , and every wooden vessel, ye yourselves cleanse.'
21 And Eleazar the priest saith unto the men of the host who go in to battle, `This <FI>is<Fi> the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses:
22 only, the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23 every thing which may go into fire, ye cause to pass over through fire, and it hath been clean; only, with the water of separation it is cleansed, and all that may not go into fire, ye cause to pass over through water;
24 and ye have washed your garments on the seventh day, and have been clean, and afterwards ye come in unto the camp.'
25 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
26 `Take up the sum of the prey of the captives, among man and among beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers of the company;
27 and thou hast halved the prey between those handling the battle who go out to the host and all the company;
28 and thou hast raised a tribute to Jehovah from the men of war, who go out to the host, one body out of five hundred, of man, and of the herd, and of the asses, and of the flock;
29 from their half ye do take, and thou hast given to Eleazar the priest--the heave-offering of Jehovah.
30 `And from the sons of Israel's half thou dost take one possession out of fifty, of man, of the herd, of the asses, and of the flock, of all the cattle, and thou hast given them to the Levites keeping the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.'
31 And Moses doth--Eleazar the priest also--as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
32 And the prey, the residue of the spoil which the people of the host have spoiled, is of the flock six hundred thousand, and seventy thousand, and five thousand;
33 and of the herd two and seventy thousand;
34 and of asses one and sixty thousand;
35 and of human beings--of the women who have not known the lying of a male--all the persons <FI>are<Fi> two and thirty thousand.
36 And the half--the portion of those who go out into the host--the number of the flock is three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, and seven thousand and five hundred.
37 And the tribute to Jehovah of the sheep is six hundred five and seventy;
38 and the herd <FI>is<Fi> six and thirty thousand, and their tribute to Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> two and seventy;
39 and the asses <FI>are<Fi> thirty thousand and five hundred, and their tribute to Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> one and sixty;
40 and the human beings <FI>are<Fi> sixteen thousand, and their tribute to Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> two and thirty persons.
41 And Moses giveth the tribute--Jehovah's heave-offering--to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
42 And of the sons of Israel's half, which Moses halved from the men who war--
43 and the company's half is, of the flock three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, seven thousand and five hundred;
44 and of the herd six and thirty thousand;
45 and of asses thirty thousand and five hundred;
46 and of human beings sixteen thousand--
47 Moses taketh from the sons of Israel's half the one possession from the fifty, of man and of beast, and giveth them to the Levites keeping the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
48 And the inspectors whom the thousands of the host hath, (heads of the thousands and heads of the hundreds), draw near unto Moses,
49 and they say unto Moses, `Thy servants have taken up the sum of the men of war who <FI>are<Fi> with us, and not a man of us hath been missed;
50 and we bring near Jehovah's offering, each that which he hath found, vessels of gold--chain, and bracelet, seal-ring, <FI>ear<Fi> -ring, and bead--to make atonement for ourselves before Jehovah.'
51 And Moses receiveth--Eleazar the priest also--the gold from them, every made vessel,
52 and all the gold of the heave-offering which they have lifted up to Jehovah is sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from heads of the thousands, and from heads of the hundreds;
53 (the men of the host have spoiled each for himself);
54 and Moses taketh--Eleazar the priest also--the gold from the heads of the thousands and of the hundreds, and they bring it in unto the tent of meeting--a memorial for the sons of Israel before Jehovah.

A long, long time ago, there was nothing at all - no earth, no sky, no animals, no people. It was all dark and empty. But God was there! God is so powerful that He can make anything just by speaking. So God said "Let there be light!" and BOOM! There was light everywhere! God saw that the light was beautiful and good. He called the light "day" and the darkness "night." This was the very first day when God started making our wonderful world!

Explain Like I'm 10

Before anything existed - no planets, stars, or life - God decided to create the universe. The earth started out as a dark, empty place covered with water. But God's Spirit was there, ready to bring order and beauty to everything. When God spoke and said "Let there be light," light immediately appeared because God's words have incredible power. God looked at the light and was pleased with what He had made. He organized time by separating light (day) from darkness (night), creating the first 24-hour period. This shows us that God is organized and purposeful in everything He does.

Genesis 1:1-5 establishes fundamental theological truths about God and creation. The Hebrew word "bara" (created) indicates creation from nothing (ex nihilo), demonstrating God's absolute sovereignty and power. The phrase "without form and void" (tohu wa-bohu) describes a state of chaos that God transforms into order. The Spirit of God "hovering" or "brooding" over the waters suggests active, caring involvement in creation. The creation of light before the sun (created on day 4) indicates that God Himself is the ultimate source of light and energy. The establishment of day and night creates the framework of time, showing that God operates within orderly patterns while transcending them. This passage refutes both atheistic materialism and pantheism, establishing that God is both transcendent (separate from creation) and immanent (actively involved in it).
