And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Jehovah shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
2
And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?
3
And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me,
4
saying,
5
Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.
6
And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.
7
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land; for Jehovah refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
8
And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
9
And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.
10
And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
11
for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
12
And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more.
13
Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Jehovah will speak unto me more.
14
And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.
15
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
16
And God’s anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Jehovah placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
17
And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
18
Then the angel of Jehovah stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

And they invited the people to the sacrifices of theirgods; and the people ate, and bowed down to theirgods.

And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.

And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.
7
And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,
8
and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9
And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12
Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!
13
And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for hisGod, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
14
And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.
15
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
16
And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
17
Harass the Midianites, and smite them,
18
for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest has caused my wrath to cease from the children of Israel, when I was exceedingly jealous among them, and I did not consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12
Thus do thou say [to him], Behold, I give him a covenant of peace:
13
and he and his seed after him shall have a perpetual covenant of priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
14
Now the name of the smitten Israelitish man, who was smitten with the Madianitish woman, [was] Zambri son of Salmon, prince of a house of the tribe of Symeon.
15
And the name of the Madianitish woman who was smitten, [was] Chasbi, daughter of Sur, a prince of the nation of Ommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Madiam.
16
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying,
17
Plague the Madianites as enemies, and smite them,
18
for they are enemies to you by the treachery wherein they ensnare you through Phogor, and through Chasbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Madiam, who was smitten in the day of the plague because of Phogor.

for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.

Israel joined himself to Baal Peor, and the LORD’s anger burned against Israel.

The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to the LORD before the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”

Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”
6
Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the middle of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.
8
He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel.
9
Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12
Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace.
13
It shall be to him, and to his offspring after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”
14
Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.
15
The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.
16
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Harass the Midianites, and strike them;
18
for they harassed you with their wiles, wherein they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the incident regarding Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”

And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

`Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.
12
`Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,
13
and it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

And the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, <FI>is<Fi> Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;
