1
In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
2
Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, saying, This people say, It is not the time
3
for us to come, the time for Jehovah’s house to be built.
4
Then came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,
5
Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your ceiled houses, while this house lieth waste?
6
Now therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.
7
Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages
8
to put it into a bag with holes.
9
Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.
10
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith Jehovah.
11
Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith Jehovah of hosts. Because of my house that lieth waste, while ye run every man to his own house.
12
Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholdeth its fruit.
13
And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands.
14
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Jehovah their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him; and the people did fear before Jehovah.
15
Then spake Haggai Jehovah’s messenger in Jehovah’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith Jehovah.

Ye have sown much, but brought in little; ye have eaten, and are not satisfied; ye have drunk, and are not satisfied with drink, ye have clothed yourselves, and have not become warm thereby: and he that earns wages has gathered [them] into a bag full of holes.

Go up to the mountain, and cut timber; build the house, and I will take pleasure in it, and be glorified, saith the Lord.

Ye looked for much, and there came little; and it was brought into the house, and I blew it away. Therefore thus saith the Lord Almighty, Because my house is desolate, and ye run every one into his own house;

1
In anno secundo Darii regis, in mense sexto, in die una mensis, factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ ad Zorobabel filium Salathiel, ducem Iuda, et ad Iesum, filium Iosedec, sacerdotem magnum, dicens:
2
Hæc ait Dominus exercituum, dicens: Populus iste dicit: Nondum venit tempus domus Domini ædificandæ.
3
Et factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ, dicens:
4
7
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Ponite corda vestra super vias vestras:
8
ascendite in montem, portate ligna, et ædificate domum: et acceptabilis mihi erit, et glorificabor, dicit Dominus.
9
11
et vocavi siccitatem super terram, et super montes, et super triticum, et super vinum, et super oleum, et quæcumque profert humus, et super homines, et super iumenta, et super omnem laborem manuum.
12

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, hath a word of Jehovah been by the hand of Haggai the prophet, unto Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and unto Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, saying:
2
Thus spake Jehovah of Hosts, saying: This people! --they have said, `The time hath not come, The time the house of Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> to be built.'
3
And there is a word of Jehovah by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:
4
Is it time for you--you! To dwell in your covered houses, And this house to lie waste?
5
And now, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, Set your heart to your ways.
6
Ye have sown much, and brought in little, To eat, and not to satiety, To drink, and not to drunkenness, To clothe, and none hath heat, And he who is hiring himself out, Is hiring himself for a bag pierced through.
7
Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Set your heart to your ways.
8
Go up the mountain, and ye have brought in wood, And build the house, and I am pleased with it. And I am honoured, said Jehovah.
9
Looking for much, and lo, little, And ye brought <FI>it<Fi> home, and I blew on it, Wherefore? --an affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, Because of My house that is waste, And ye are running--each to his house,
10
Therefore, over you refrained have the heavens from dew, And the land hath refrained its increase.
11
And I proclaim draught on the land, And on the mountains, and on the corn, And on the new wine, and on the oil, And on what the ground doth bring forth, And on man, and on beast, And on all labour of the hands.'
12
And Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, do hearken to the voice of Jehovah their God, and unto the words of Haggai the prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him, and the people are afraid of the face of Jehovah.
13
And Haggai, messenger of Jehovah, in messages of Jehovah, speaketh to the people, saying: `I <FI>am<Fi> with you, an affirmation of Jehovah.'
14
And Jehovah doth stir up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people, and they come in, and do work in the house of Jehovah of Hosts their God,
