And in all vineyards shall be wailing; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Jehovah.

Woe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! Wherefore would ye have the day of Jehovah? It is darkness, and not light.
3
As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
4
Shall not the day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
5
I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
6
Yea, though ye offer me your burnt-offerings and meal-offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts.
7
Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
8
But let justice roll down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
9
Did ye bring unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
10
Yea, ye have borne the tabernacle of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
11
Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith Jehovah, whose name is the God of hosts.

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and to them that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!
13
Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? or is their border greater than your border?
14

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion and that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the renowned of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come.
2
Pass unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go to Hamath the great; and go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
3
Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
4
that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves from the midst of the stall;
5
that chant to the sound of the lute, [and] invent them instruments of music, like David;
6
that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but are not grieved for the breach of Joseph.
7
Therefore shall they now go captive, with the first that go captive, and the revelry of them that stretched themselves shall pass away.
8
The Lord Jehovah hath sworn by himself, saith Jehovah, theGod of hosts, I abhor the pride of Jacob, and hate his palaces; and I will deliver up the city with all that is therein.
9
And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.
10
And a man's uncle, and he that should burn him, shall take him up to bring out the bones from the house, and shall say unto him that is in the inner parts of the house, Is there yet [any] with thee? and he shall say, None. And he will say, Silence! for we may not make mention of Jehovah's name.
11
For behold, Jehovah commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
12
Shall horses run upon the rock? will [men] plough [thereon] with oxen? For ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,
13
— ye that rejoice in a thing of nought, that say, Have we not taken to us power by our own strength?
14
For behold, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah theGod of hosts, I will raise up against you a nation; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hamath unto the torrent of the Arabah.

For the Lord has sworn by himself, [saying], Because I abhor all the pride of Jacob, I do also hate his countries, and I will cut off [his] city with all who inhabit it.

And it shall come to pass, if there be ten men left in one house, that they shall die.

But a remnant shall be left behind, and their relations shall take them, and shall strenuously endeavour to carry forth their bones from the house: and one shall say to the heads of the house, Is there yet [any one] else with thee? And he shall say, No [one] else. And [the other] shall say, Be silent, that thou name not the name of the Lord.

For, behold, the Lord commands, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with rents.

Will horses run upon rocks? will they refrain from neighing at mares? for ye have turned judgment into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness:
13
ye who rejoice at vanity, who say, Have we not possessed horns by our own strength?
14
For behold, O house of Israel, I will raise up against you a nation, saith the Lord of hosts; and they shall afflict you so that ye shall not enter into Æmath, and as it were [from] the river of the wilderness.

who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the middle of the stall,
5
who strum on the strings of a harp, who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;
6
who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive. The feasting and lounging will end.

“The Lord GOD has sworn by himself,” says the LORD, the God of Armies: “I abhor the pride of Jacob, and detest his fortresses. Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.
9
It will happen that if ten men remain in one house, they will die.

“When a man’s relative carries him, even he who burns him, to bring bodies out of the house, and asks him who is in the innermost parts of the house, ‘Is there yet any with you?’ And he says, ‘No;’ then he will say, ‘Hush! Indeed we must not mention the LORD’s name.’

“For, behold, the LORD commands, and the great house will be smashed to pieces, and the little house into bits.

Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness,

you who rejoice in a thing of nothing, who say, ‘Haven’t we taken for ourselves horns by our own strength?’
14
For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, house of Israel,” says the LORD, the God of Armies; “and they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.”
