1
thus saith Jehovah concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;
2
thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.
3
And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them;
4
because they have not hearkened to my words, saith Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith Jehovah.
5
Hear ye therefore the word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.
6
Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie unto you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;
7
and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;
8
because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith Jehovah.
9
And concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou shalt speak, saying,
10
Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thine own name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,
11
Jehovah hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in shackles.
12
Now therefore, why hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who maketh himself a prophet to you,
13
forasmuch as he hath sent unto us in Babylon, saying,
14
The captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?
15
And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.
16
Then came the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,
17
Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he hath caused you to trust in a lie;
18
therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do unto my people, saith Jehovah, because he hath spoken rebellion against Jehovah.
19
The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,
20
Thus speaketh Jehovah, the God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.
21
For, lo, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will turn again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith Jehovah; and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.
22
And these are the words that Jehovah spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah.
23
For thus saith Jehovah: We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.
24
Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child: wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?
25
Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.
26
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds; and strangers shall no more make him their bondman;
27
but they shall serve Jehovah their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.
28
Therefore fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith Jehovah; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
29
For I am with thee, saith Jehovah, to save thee: for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have scattered thee, but I will not make a full end of thee; but I will correct thee in measure, and will in no wise leave thee unpunished.
30
For thus saith Jehovah, Thy hurt is incurable, and thy wound grievous.
31
There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines.
32
All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not: for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the greatness of thine iniquity, because thy sins were increased.
33
Why criest thou for thy hurt? thy pain is incurable: for the greatness of thine iniquity, because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.
34
Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they that despoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey.
35
For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith Jehovah; because they have called thee an outcast,
36
saying, It is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.
37
Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will turn again the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have compassion on his dwelling-places; and the city shall be builded upon its own hill, and the palace shall be inhabited after its own manner.
38
And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
39
Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before me; and I will punish all that oppress them.
40
And their prince shall be of themselves, and their ruler shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is he that hath had boldness to approach unto me? saith Jehovah.
41
And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
42
Behold, the tempest of Jehovah,
43
even his wrath, is gone forth, a sweeping tempest: it shall burst upon the head of the wicked.
44
The fierce anger of Jehovah shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall understand it.

The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah: that year was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.
2
And the king of Babylon's army was then besieging Jerusalem; and the prophet Jeremiah was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah's house.
3
For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Why dost thou prophesy and say, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
4
and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans; for he shall certainly be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;
5
and he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith Jehovah: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper?
6
And Jeremiah said, The word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
7
Behold, Hanameel, the son of Shallum thine uncle, shall come unto thee, saying, Buy for thyself my field which is in Anathoth; for thine is the right of redemption, to buy [it].
8
And Hanameel, mine uncle's son, came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of Jehovah, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine: buy [it] for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of Jehovah.
9
And I bought of Hanameel, mine uncle's son, the field which is in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, seventeen shekels of silver.
10
And I subscribed the writing, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed the money in the balances.
11
And I took the writing of the purchase, that which was sealed [according to] the law and the statutes, and that which was open;
12
and I gave the writing of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Nerijah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle's [son], and in the presence of the witnesses that had subscribed the writing of purchase, before all the Jews that were sitting in the court of the guard.
13
And I charged Baruch in their presence, saying,
14
Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, theGod of Israel: Take these writings, this writing of the purchase, both that which is sealed and this writing which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may remain many days.
15
For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, theGod of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be purchased in this land.
16
And after I had given the writing of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Nerijah, I prayed unto Jehovah saying,
17
Alas, Lord Jehovah! Behold, thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy great power and stretched-out arm; there is nothing too hard for thee:
18
who shewest mercy unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them, thou, the great, the mightyGod, — Jehovah of hosts is his name;
19
great in counsel and mighty in work, whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the children of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
20
who hast displayed signs and wonders unto this day, in the land of Egypt and in Israel and among [other] men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day.
21
And thou broughtest forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt by signs, and by wonders, and by a powerful hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terror;
22
and didst give them this land, which thou hadst sworn unto their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey.
23
And they came in and possessed it: but they hearkened not unto thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do; so that thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them.
24
Behold the mounds, they are come unto the city for taking it; and the city is given over into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, by the sword, and the famine, and the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and behold, thou seest [it].
25
And thou, Lord Jehovah, thou hast said unto me, Buy for thyself the field for money, and take witnesses; — and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
26
And the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, saying,
27
Behold, I am Jehovah, theGod of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?
28
Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.
29
And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come in and set fire to this city, and shall burn it, and the houses upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink-offerings unto othergods, to provoke me to anger.
30
For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have been doing only evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith Jehovah.
31
For this city hath been to me [a provocation] of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
32
because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33
And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face; and though I taught them, rising early and teaching, they hearkened not to receive instruction.
34
And they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it;
35
and they have built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause to pass through [the fire] their sons and their daughters unto Molech: which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
36
And now therefore Jehovah, theGod of Israel, saith thus concerning this city, whereof ye say, It hath been given over into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence:
37
Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries whither I have driven them, in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely.
38
And they shall be my people, and I will be theirGod.
39
And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me all [their] days, for the good of them, and of their children after them.
40
And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not draw back from them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their heart, that they may not turn aside from me.
41
And I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land with my whole heart and with my whole soul.
42
For thus saith Jehovah: Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have spoken concerning them.
43
And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
44
[Men] shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the writings, and seal them, and take witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the environs of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south: for I will turn their captivity, saith Jehovah.

15
Thus said the Lord God of Israel; Take the cup of this unmixed wine from mine hand, and thou shalt cause all the nations to drink, to whom I send thee.
16
And they shall drink, and vomit, and be mad, because of the sword which I send among them.
17
So I took the cup out of the Lord's hand, and caused the nations to whom the Lord sent me to drink:
18
Jerusalem, and the cities of Juda, and the kings of Juda, and his princes, to make them a desert place, a desolation, and a hissing;
19
and Pharao king of Egypt, and his servants, and his nobles, and all his people;
20
and all the mingled [people], and all the kings of the Philistines, and Ascalon, and Gaza, and Accaron, and the remnant of Azotus,
21
and Idumea, and the land of Moab, and the children of Ammon,
22
and the kings of Tyre, and the kings of Sidon, and the kings in the [country] beyond the sea,
23
and Dædan, and Thæman, and Ros, and every one that is shaved round about the face,
24
and all the mingled [people] lodging in the wilderness,
25
and all the kings of Ælam, and all the kings of the Persians,
26
and all the kings from the north, the far and the near, each one with his brother, and all the kingdoms which are on the face of the earth.
27
And thou shalt say to them, Thus said the Lord Almighty; Drink ye, be ye drunken; and ye shall vomit, and shall fall, and shall in nowise rise, because of the sword which I send among you.
28
And it shall come to pass, when they refuse to take the cup out of thine hand, to drink it, that thou shalt say, Thus said the Lord; Ye shall surely drink.
29
For I am beginning to afflict the city whereon my name is called, and ye shall by no means be held guiltless: for I am calling a sword upon all that dwell upon the earth.
30
And thou shalt prophesy against them these words, and shalt say, The Lord shall speak from on high, from his sanctuary he will utter his voice; he will pronounce a declaration on his place; and these shall answer like men gathering grapes: and destruction is coming on them that dwell on the earth,
31
[even] upon [the extreme] part of the earth; for the Lord [has] a controversy with the nations, he is pleading with all flesh, and the ungodly are given to the sword, saith the Lord.
32
Thus said the Lord; Behold, evils are proceeding from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind goes forth from the end of the earth.
33
And the slain of the Lord shall be in the day of the Lord from [one] end of the earth even to the [other] end of the earth: they shall not be buried; they shall be as dung on the face of the earth.
34
Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and lament, ye rams of the flock: for your days have been completed for slaughter, and ye shall fall as the choice rams.
35
And flight shall perish from the shepherds, and safety from the rams of the flock.
36
A voice of the crying of the shepherds, and a moaning of the sheep and the rams: for the Lord has destroyed their pastures.
37
And the peaceable abodes that remain shall be destroyed before the fierceness of my anger.
38
He has forsaken his lair, as a lion: for their land is become desolate before the great sword.

1
2
Tunc exercitus regis Babylonis obsidebat Ierusalem: et Ieremias propheta erat clausus in atrio carceris, qui erat in domo regis Iuda.
3
Clauserat enim eum Sedecias rex Iuda, dicens: Quare vaticinaris, dicens: Hæc dicit Dominus: Ecce ego dabo civitatem istam in manus regis Babylonis, et capiet eam?
4
10
Et scripsi in libro, et signavi, et adhibui testes: et appendi argentum in statera.
11
Et accepi librum possessionis signatum, et stipulationes, et rata, et signa forinsecus.
12
Et dedi librum possessionis Baruch filio Neri filii Maasiæ in oculis Hanameel patruelis mei, in oculis testium, qui scripti erant in libro emptionis, et in oculis omnium Iudæorum, qui sedebant in atrio carceris.
13
Et præcepi Baruch coram eis, dicens:
14
17
Heu, heu, heu, Domine Deus: ecce tu fecisti cælum et terram in fortitudine tua magna, et in brachio tuo extento: non erit tibi difficile omne verbum:
18
Qui facis misericordiam in millibus, et reddis iniquitatem patrum in sinum filiorum eorum post eos: Fortissime, magne, et potens, Dominus exercituum nomen tibi.
19
21
Et eduxisti populum tuum Israel de Terra Ægypti, in signis, et in portentis, et in manu robusta, et in brachio extento, et in terrore magno.
22
27
Ecce ego Dominus Deus universæ carnis: numquid mihi difficile erit omne verbum?
28
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus: Ecce ego tradam civitatem istam in manus Chaldæorum, et in manus regis Babylonis, et capient eam.
29
30
Erant enim filii Israel, et filii Iuda iugiter facientes malum in oculis meis ab adolescentia sua: filii Israel qui usque nunc exacerbant me in opere manuum suarum, dicit Dominus.
31
38
Et erunt mihi in populum, et ego ero eis in Deum.
39
40
Et feriam eis pactum sempiternum, et non desinam eis benefacere: et timorem meum dabo in corde eorum ut non recedant a me.
41

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
2
Now at that time the king of Babylon’s army was besieging Jerusalem. Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah’s house.
3
For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you prophesy, and say, ‘The LORD says, “Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take it;
4
and Zedekiah king of Judah won’t escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but will surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes will see his eyes;
5
and he will bring Zedekiah to Babylon, and he will be there until I visit him,” says the LORD, “though you fight with the Chaldeans, you will not prosper”’?”
6
Jeremiah said, “The LORD’s word came to me, saying,
7
‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field that is in Anathoth; for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.”’”
8
“So Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the LORD’s word, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours. Buy it for yourself.’ “Then I knew that this was the LORD’s word.
9
I bought the field that was in Anathoth of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
10
I signed the deed, sealed it, called witnesses, and weighed the money in the balances to him.
11
So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open;
12
and I delivered the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of the purchase, before all the Jews who sat in the court of the guard.
13
“I commanded Baruch before them, saying,
14
the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may last many days.’
15
For the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel says: ‘Houses and fields and vineyards will yet again be bought in this land.’
16
Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD, saying,
17
“Ah Lord GOD! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you.
18
You show loving kindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them. The great, the mighty God, the LORD of Armies is your name:
19
great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings;
20
who performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even to this day, both in Israel and among other men; and made yourself a name, as it is today;
21
and brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, with wonders, with a strong hand, with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;
22
and gave them this land, which you swore to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey.
23
They came in and possessed it, but they didn’t obey your voice and didn’t walk in your law. They have done nothing of all that you commanded them to do. Therefore you have caused all this evil to come upon them.
24
“Behold, siege ramps have been built against the city to take it. The city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, of the famine, and of the pestilence. What you have spoken has happened. Behold, you see it.
25
You have said to me, Lord GOD, ‘Buy the field for money, and call witnesses;’ whereas the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.”
26
Then the LORD’s word came to Jeremiah, saying,
27
“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for me?
28
Therefore the LORD says: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will take it.
29
The Chaldeans, who fight against this city, will come and set this city on fire, and burn it with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.
30
“For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, says the LORD.
31
For this city has been to me a provocation of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even to this day, so that I should remove it from before my face,
32
because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger—they, their kings, their princes, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33
They have turned their backs to me, and not their faces. Although I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction.
34
But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.
35
They built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through fire to Molech, which I didn’t command them. It didn’t even come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.”
36
Now therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning this city, about which you say, “It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:”
37
“Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries where I have driven them in my anger, and in my wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them again to this place. I will cause them to dwell safely.
38
Then they will be my people, and I will be their God.
39
I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their good and the good of their children after them.
40
I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good. I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.
41
Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.”
42
For the LORD says: “Just as I have brought all this great evil on this people, so I will bring on them all the good that I have promised them.
43
Fields will be bought in this land, about which you say, ‘It is desolate, without man or animal. It is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’
44
Men will buy fields for money, sign the deeds, seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South; for I will cause their captivity to be reversed,” says the LORD.

1
The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah--it <FI>is<Fi> the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar,
2
And then the forces of the king of Babylon are laying siege against Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet hath been shut up in the court of the prison that <FI>is<Fi> in the house of the king of Judah,
3
Where Zedekiah king of Judah hath shut him up, saying, `Wherefore art thou prophesying, saying, Thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he hath captured it;
4
And Zedekiah king of Judah doth not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but is certainly given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and his mouth hath spoken with his mouth, and his eyes see his eyes,
5
And <FI>to<Fi> Babylon he leadeth Zedekiah, and there he is till My inspecting him, --an affirmation of Jehovah--because ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye do not prosper.'
6
And Jeremiah saith, `A word of Jehovah hath been unto me saying,
7
Lo, Hanameel son of Shallum, thine uncle, is coming unto thee, saying, Buy for thee my field that <FI>is<Fi> in Anathoth, for thine <FI>is<Fi> the right of redemption--to buy.
8
And Hanameel, my uncle's son, cometh in unto me, according to the word of Jehovah, unto the court of the prison, and saith unto me, `Buy, I pray thee, my field that <FI>is<Fi> in Anathoth, that <FI>is<Fi> in the land of Benjamin, for thine <FI>is<Fi> the right of possession, and thine of redemption--buy for thee.' And I know that it <FI>is<Fi> the word of Jehovah,
9
And I buy the field, that <FI>is<Fi> in Anathoth, from Hanameel, my uncle's son, and I weigh to him the money--seventeen shekels of silver.
10
And I write in a book, and seal, and cause witnesses to testify, and weigh the silver in balances;
11
And I take the purchase-book, the sealed one, according to law and custom, and the open one.
12
And I give the purchase-book unto Baruch son of Neriah, son of Maaseiah, before the eyes of Hanameel, my uncle's son, and before the eyes of the witnesses, those writing in the purchase-book, before the eyes of all the Jews who are sitting in the court of the prison.
13
And I charge Baruch before their eyes, saying,
14
`Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, Take these books, this purchase-book, both the sealed one and the open one, and thou hast put them in an earthen vessel, that they may remain many days;
15
For thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, Again are houses and fields and vineyards bought in this land.'
16
And I pray unto Jehovah--after my giving the purchase-book unto Baruch son of Neriah--saying,
17
`Ah, Lord Jehovah, lo, Thou hast made the heavens and the earth by Thy great power, and by Thy stretched-out arm; there is nothing too wonderful for Thee:
18
Doing kindness to thousands, and recompensing iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their sons after them; God, the great, the mighty, Jehovah of Hosts <FI>is<Fi> His name,
19
Great in counsel, and mighty in act, in that Thine eyes are open on all the ways of the sons of Adam, to give to each according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
20
In that thou hast done signs and wonders in the land of Egypt unto this day, and in Israel, and among men, and Thou dost make for Thee a name as <FI>at<Fi> this day.
21
`And Thou bringest forth Thy people Israel from the land of Egypt, with signs and with wonders, and by a strong hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great fear,
22
And thou givest to them this land that thou didst swear to their fathers to give to them, a land flowing with milk and honey,
23
And they come in, and possess it, and they have not hearkened to Thy voice, and in Thy law have not walked, all that which Thou didst lay a charge on them to do they have not done, and Thou dost proclaim <FI>to<Fi> them all this evil.
24
`Lo, the mounts--they have come in to the city to capture it, and the city hath been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it, because of the sword, and the famine, and the pestilence; and that which Thou hast spoken hath come to pass, and lo, Thou art seeing;
25
Yet Thou hast said unto me, O Lord Jehovah, Buy for thee the field with money, and cause witnesses to testify--and the city hath been given into the hand of the Chaldeans!'
26
And the word of Jehovah is unto Jeremiah, saying:
27
`Lo, I <FI>am<Fi> Jehovah, God of all flesh: For Me is anything too wonderful?
28
`Therefore, thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am giving this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he hath captured it;
29
And come in have the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city, and they have set this city on fire, and have burned it, and the houses on whose roofs they made perfume to Baal, and poured out libations to other gods, so as to provoke Me to anger.
30
For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have been only doing evil in Mine eyes, from their youth; for the sons of Israel are only provoking Me with the work of their hands--an affirmation of Jehovah.
31
`For a cause of Mine anger, and a cause of My fury, hath this city been to Me, even from the day that they built it, and unto this day--to turn it aside from before My face,
32
Because of all the evil of the sons of Israel, and of the sons of Judah that they have done, so as to provoke Me--they, their kings, their heads, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33
And they turn unto Me the neck, and not the face, and teaching them, rising early and teaching, and they are not hearkening to accept instruction.
34
`And they set their abominations in the house over which My name is called, so as to defile it;
35
And they build the high places of Baal, that <FI>are<Fi> in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through to Molech, which I did not command them, nor did it come up on my heart to do this abomination, so as to cause Judah to sin.
36
`And now, therefore, thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, concerning this city, of which ye are saying, It hath been given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, and by famine, and by pestilence,
37
Lo, I am gathering them out of all the lands whither I have driven them in Mine anger, and in My fury, and in great wrath, and I have brought them back unto this place, and have caused them to dwell confidently;
38
and they have been to Me for a people, and I am to them for God;
39
and I have given to them one heart, and one way, to fear Me all the days, for good to them, and to their sons after them:
40
and I have made for them a covenant age-during, in that I turn not back from after them for My doing them good, and My fear I put in their heart, so as not to turn aside from me;
41
and I have rejoiced over them to do them good, and have planted them in this land in truth, with all my heart, and with all My soul.
42
`For thus said Jehovah: As I brought in unto this people all this great evil, so I am bringing in on them all the good that I am speaking concerning them;
43
and bought hath been the field in this land of which ye are saying, A desolation it <FI>is<Fi> , without man and beast, it hath been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
44
Fields with money they buy, so as to write in a book, and to seal, and to cause witnesses to testify, in the land of Benjamin, and in suburbs of Jerusalem, and in cities of Judah, and in cities of the hill-country, and in cities of the low country, and in cities of the south, for I turn back their captivity--an affirmation of Jehovah.'
