1
Shall a man make unto himself gods, which yet are no gods?
2
Therefore, behold, I will cause them to know, this once will I cause them to know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Jehovah.
3
The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron,
4
and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the tablet of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;
5
whilst their children remember their altars and their Asherim by the green trees upon the high hills.
6
O my mountain in the field, I will give thy substance and all thy treasures for a spoil,
7
and thy high places, because of sin, throughout all thy borders.
8
And thou, even of thyself, shalt discontinue from thy heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have kindled a fire in mine anger which shall burn for ever.
9
Thus saith Jehovah: Cursed is the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from Jehovah.
10
For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited.
11
Blessed is the man that trusteth in Jehovah, and whose trust Jehovah is.
12
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat cometh, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
13
The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?
14
I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

1
Thus saith Jehovah: Go and buy a potter's earthen flagon, and [take] of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;
2
and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the pottery-gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,
3
and say, Hear the word of Jehovah, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, theGod of Israel: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle;
4
because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place [from me], and have burned incense in it unto othergods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
5
and they have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire as burnt-offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it up into my mind:
6
therefore behold, days come, saith Jehovah, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor Valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter.
7
And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of them that seek their life, and their carcases will I give as food to the fowl of the heavens and to the beasts of the earth.
8
And I will make this city an astonishment and a hissing; every one that passeth by shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.
9
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat everyone the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the straitness wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.
10
And thou shalt break the flagon in the sight of the men that go with thee,
11
and shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again. And they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place to bury.
12
Thus will I do unto this place, saith Jehovah, and to the inhabitants thereof, and make this city as Topheth.
13
And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be as the place of Topheth, defiled, all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of the heavens, and have poured out drink-offerings unto othergods.
14
And Jeremiah came from Topheth, whither Jehovah had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Jehovah's house, and said to all the people,
15
Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, theGod of Israel: Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her cities all the evil that I have spoken against it; for they have hardened their necks, not to hear my words.

1
Then said the Lord to me, Go and get an earthen bottle, the work of the potter, and thou shalt bring [some] of the elders of the people, and of the priests;
2
and thou shalt go forth to the burial-place of the sons of their children, which is at the entrance of the gate of Charsith; and do thou read there all these words which I shall speak to thee:
3
and thou shalt say to them, Hear ye the word of the Lord, ye kings of Juda, and men of Juda, and the dwellers in Jerusalem, and they that enter in by these gates; thus saith the Lord God of Israel; Behold, I [will] bring evil upon this place, so that the ears of every one that hears it shall tingle.
4
Because they forsook me, and profaned this place, and burnt incense in it to strange gods, which they and their fathers knew not; and the kings of Juda have filled this place with innocent blood,
5
and built high places for Baal, to burn their children in the fire, which things I commanded not, neither did I design [them] in my heart:
6
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when this place shall no more be called, The fall and burial-place of the son of Ennom, but, The burial-place of slaughter.
7
And I will destroy the counsel of Juda and the counsel of Jerusalem in this place; and I will cast them down with the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and I will give their dead bodies for food to the birds of the sky and to the wild beasts of the earth.
8
And I will bring this city to desolation and [make it] a hissing; every one that passes by it shall scowl, and hiss because of all her plague.
9
And they shall eat the flesh of their sons, and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat every one the flesh of his neighbour in the blockade, and in the siege wherewith their enemies shall besiege them.
10
And thou shalt break the bottle in the sight of the men that go forth with thee,
11
and thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord, Thus will I break in pieces this people, and this city, even as an earthen vessel is broken in pieces which cannot be mended again.
12
Thus will I do, saith the Lord, to this place, and to the inhabitants of it, that this city may be given up, as one that is falling to ruin.
13
And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Juda shall be as a ruinous place, because of their uncleannesses in all the houses, wherein they burnt incense upon their roofs to all the host of heaven, and poured drink-offerings to strange gods.
14
And Jeremias came from [the place] of the Fall, whither the Lord had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the Lord's house; and said to all the people, Thus saith the Lord;
15
Behold, I bring upon this city, and upon all the cities belonging to it, and upon the villages of it, all the evils which I have spoken against it, because they have hardened their neck, [that they might not] hearken to my commands.

1
Hæc dicit Dominus: Vade, et accipe lagunculam figuli testeam a senioribus populi, et a senioribus sacerdotum:
2
7
Et dissipabo consilium Iuda et Ierusalem in loco isto: et subvertam eos gladio in conspectu inimicorum suorum, et in manu quærentium animas eorum: et dabo cadavera eorum escam volatilibus cæli, et bestiis terræ.
8
Et ponam civitatem hanc in stuporem, et in sibilum: omnis, qui præterierit per eam, obstupescet, et sibilabit super universa plaga eius.
9
Et cibabo eos carnibus filiorum suorum, et carnibus filiarum suarum: et unusquisque carnem amici sui comedet in obsidione, et in angustia, in qua concludent eos inimici eorum, et qui quærunt animas eorum.
10
Et conteres lagunculam in oculis virorum, qui ibunt tecum.
11
15
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum Deus Israel: Ecce ego inducam super civitatem hanc, et super omnes urbes eius universa mala, quæ locutus sum adversum eam: quoniam induraverunt cervicem suam ut non audirent sermones meos.
