Psalms Chapter 61

Other Translations

asv (asv) - eBible.org engASV USFM

1 Then Jehovah will take me up.
2 Teach me thy way, O Jehovah;
3 And lead me in a plain path,
4 Because of mine enemies.
5 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine adversaries:
6 For false witnesses are risen up against me,
7 And such as breathe out cruelty.
8 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of Jehovah

1 Hear, OGod, my cry; attend unto my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth will I call unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: thou wilt lead me on to a rock which is too high for me.
3 For thou hast been a refuge for me, a strong tower from before the enemy.
4 I will sojourn in thy tent for ever; I will take refuge in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
5 For thou, OGod, hast heard my vows; thou hast given [me] the inheritance of those that fear thy name.
6 Thou wilt add days to the days of the king: his years shall be as many generations.
7 He shall abide beforeGod for ever: bestow loving-kindness and truth, that they may preserve him.
8 So will I sing forth thy name for ever, performing my vows from day to day.

1 For the end, a Psalm of David for Idithun.
2 Shall not my soul be subjected to God? for of him is my salvation.
3 For he is my God and my Saviour; my helper, I shall not be moved very much.
4 How long will ye assault a man? ye are all slaughtering as with a bowed wall and a broken hedge.
5 They only took counsel to set at nought mine honour: I ran in thirst: with their mouth they blessed, but with their heart they cursed. Pause.
6 Nevertheless do thou, my soul, be subjected to God; for of him [is] my patient hope.
7 For he [is] my God and my Saviour; my helper, I shall not be moved.
8 In God [is] my salvation and my glory: [he is] the God of my help, and my hope is in God.
9 Hope in him, all ye congregation of the people; pour out your hearts before him, for God is our helper. Pause.
10 But the sons of men are vain; the sons of men are false, so as to be deceitful in the balances; they are all alike [formed] out of vanity.
11 Trust not in unrighteousness, and lust not after robberies: if wealth should flow in, set not your heart upon it.
12 God has spoken once, [and] I have heard these two things, that power is of God;
13 and mercy is thine, O Lord; for thou wilt recompense every one according to his works.

1 In finem, Pro Idithun, Psalmus David.
9 Sperate in eo omnis congregatio populi, effundite coram illo corda vestra: Deus adiutor noster in æternum.
10 Verumtamen vani filii hominum, mendaces filii hominum in stateris: ut decipiant ipsi de vanitate in idipsum.
11 Nolite sperare in iniquitate, et rapinas nolite concupiscere: divitiæ si affluant, nolite cor apponere.
12 Semel locutus est Deus, duo hæc audivi, quia potestas Dei est,
13 et tibi Domine misericordia: quia tu reddes unicuique iuxta opera sua.

5 For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
6 You will prolong the king’s life. His years will be for generations.

1 To the Overseer, on stringed instruments. --By David. Hear, O God, my loud cry, attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the land unto Thee I call, In the feebleness of my heart, Into a rock higher than I Thou dost lead me.
3 For Thou hast been a refuge for me, A tower of strength because of the enemy.
4 I sojourn in Thy tent to the ages, I trust in the secret place of Thy wings. Selah.
5 For Thou, O God, hast hearkened to my vows, Thou hast appointed the inheritance Of those fearing Thy name.
6 Days to the days of the king Thou addest, His years as generation and generation.
7 He dwelleth to the age before God, Kindness and truth appoint--they keep him.
8 So do I praise Thy name for ever, When I pay my vows day by day!

A long, long time ago, there was nothing at all - no earth, no sky, no animals, no people. It was all dark and empty. But God was there! God is so powerful that He can make anything just by speaking. So God said "Let there be light!" and BOOM! There was light everywhere! God saw that the light was beautiful and good. He called the light "day" and the darkness "night." This was the very first day when God started making our wonderful world!

Explain Like I'm 10

Before anything existed - no planets, stars, or life - God decided to create the universe. The earth started out as a dark, empty place covered with water. But God's Spirit was there, ready to bring order and beauty to everything. When God spoke and said "Let there be light," light immediately appeared because God's words have incredible power. God looked at the light and was pleased with what He had made. He organized time by separating light (day) from darkness (night), creating the first 24-hour period. This shows us that God is organized and purposeful in everything He does.

Genesis 1:1-5 establishes fundamental theological truths about God and creation. The Hebrew word "bara" (created) indicates creation from nothing (ex nihilo), demonstrating God's absolute sovereignty and power. The phrase "without form and void" (tohu wa-bohu) describes a state of chaos that God transforms into order. The Spirit of God "hovering" or "brooding" over the waters suggests active, caring involvement in creation. The creation of light before the sun (created on day 4) indicates that God Himself is the ultimate source of light and energy. The establishment of day and night creates the framework of time, showing that God operates within orderly patterns while transcending them. This passage refutes both atheistic materialism and pantheism, establishing that God is both transcendent (separate from creation) and immanent (actively involved in it).
