1
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.
2
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3
His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
4
And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6
Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.
7
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.
9
Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10
Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11
But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.
12
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.
13
And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,
14
that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;
15
and the Sabeans fell
16
upon them, and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
19
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house;
20
and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
21
Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;
22
and he said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

In all this Job sinned not, nor ascribed anything unseemly toGod.

1
There was a certain man in the land of Ausis, whose name [was] Job; and that man was true, blameless, righteous, [and] godly, abstaining from everything evil.
2
And he had seven sons and three daughters.
3
And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses in the pastures, and a very great household, and he had a great husbandry on the earth; and that man was [most] noble of the [men] of the east.
4
And his sons visiting one another prepared a banquet every day, taking with them also their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5
And when the days of the banquet were completed, Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning, and offered sacrifices for them, according to their number, and one calf for a sin-offering for their souls: for Job said, Lest peradventure my sons have thought evil in their minds against God. Thus then Job did continually.
6
And it came to pass on a day, that, behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came with them.
7
And the Lord said to the devil, Whence art thou come? And the devil answered the Lord, and said, I am come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world.
8
And the Lord said to him, Hast thou diligently considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a man blameless, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil?
9
Then the devil answered, and said before the Lord, Does Job worship the Lord for nothing?
10
Hast thou not made a hedge about him, and about his household, and all his possessions round about? and hast thou not blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his cattle upon the land?
11
But put forth thine hand, and touch all that he has: verily he will bless thee to [thy] face.
12
Then the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I give into thine hand all that he has, but touch not himself. So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord.
13
And it came to pass on a certain day, that Job's sons and his daughters were drinking wine in the house of their elder brother.
14
And, behold, there came a messenger to Job, and said to him, The yokes of oxen were ploughing, and the she-asses were feeding near them;
15
and the spoilers came and took them for a prey, and slew the servants with the sword; and I having escaped alone am come to tell thee.
16
While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, Fire has fallen from heaven, and burnt up the sheep, and devoured the shepherds likewise; and I having escaped alone am come to tell thee.
17
While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, The horsemen formed three companies against us, and surrounded the camels, and took them for a prey, and slew the servants with the sword; and I only escaped, and am come to tell thee.
18
While he is yet speaking, another messenger comes, saying to Job, While thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking with their elder brother,
19
suddenly a great wind came on from the desert, and caught the four corners of the house, and the house fell upon thy children, and they are dead; and I have escaped alone, and am come to tell thee.
20
So Job arose, and rent his garments, and shaved the hair of his head, and fell on the earth, and worshipped,
21
and said, I myself came forth naked from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away: as it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; blessed be the name of the Lord.
22
In all these events that befel him Job sinned not at all before the Lord, and did not impute folly to God.

1
9
Cui respondens Satan, ait: Numquid Iob frustra timet Deum?
10
nonne tu vallasti eum, ac domum eius, universamque substantiam per circuitum, operibus manuum eius benedixisti, et possessio eius crevit in terra?
11
Sed extende paululum manum tuam, et tange cuncta quæ possidet nisi in faciem benedixerit tibi.
12
Dixit ergo Dominus ad Satan: Ecce, universa quæ habet, in manu tua sunt: tantum in eum ne extendas manum tuam. Egressusque est Satan a facie Domini.
13

The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

A man there hath been in the land of Uz--Job his name--and that man hath been perfect and upright--both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.
2
And there are borne to him seven sons and three daughters,
3
and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a service very abundant; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east.
4
And his sons have gone and made a banquet--the house of each <FI>in<Fi> his day--and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them;
5
and it cometh to pass, when they have gone round the days of the banquet, that Job doth send and sanctify them, and hath risen early in the morning, and caused to ascend burnt-offerings--the number of them all--for Job said, `Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.' Thus doth Job all the days.
6
And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.
7
And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence comest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.'
8
And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?'
9
And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `For nought is Job fearing God?
10
Hast not Thou made a hedge for him, and for his house, and for all that he hath--round about?
11
The work of his hands Thou hast blessed, and his substance hath spread in the land, and yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike against anything that he hath--if not: to Thy face he doth bless Thee!'
12
And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, all that he hath <FI>is<Fi> in thy hand, only unto him put not forth thy hand.' And the Adversary goeth out from the presence of Jehovah.
13
And the day is, that his sons and his daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.
14
And a messenger hath come in unto Job and saith, `The oxen have been plowing, and the she-asses feeding by their sides,
15
and Sheba doth fall, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'
16
While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Fire of God hath fallen from the heavens, and burneth among the flock, and among the young men, and consumeth them, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI> it<Fi> to thee.'
17
While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Chaldeans made three heads, and rush on the camels, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'
18
While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Thy sons and thy daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.
19
And lo, a great wind hath come from over the wilderness, and striketh against the four corners of the house, and it falleth on the young men, and they are dead, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'
20
And Job riseth, and rendeth his robe, and shaveth his head, and falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance,
21
and he saith, `Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked I turn back thither: Jehovah hath given and Jehovah hath taken: let the name of Jehovah be blessed.'
22
In all this Job hath not sinned, nor given folly to God.
