1
And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and saw them, and, behold, they were sad.
2
And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in ward in his master’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sad to-day?
3
And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell it me, I pray you.
4
And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;
5
and in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded,
6
and its blossoms shot forth;
7
and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
8
and Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.
9
And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days;
10
within yet three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head, and restore thee unto thine office: and thou shalt give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.
11
But have me in thy remembrance when it shall be well with thee, and show kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:
12
for indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.
13
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head:
14
and in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of baked food for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
15
And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: the three baskets are three days;
16
within yet three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.
17
And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
18
And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand:
19
but he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.
20
Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.
21
And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.
22
And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, well-favored and fat-fleshed; and they fed in the reed-grass.
23
And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill-favored and lean-fleshed, and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.
24
And the ill-favored and lean-fleshed kine did eat up the seven well-favored and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.
25
And he slept and dreamed a second time: and, behold, seven ears of grain came up upon one stalk, rank and good.
26
And, behold, seven ears, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.
27
And the thin ears swallowed up the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.
28
And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.
29
Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:
30
Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, me and the chief baker:
31
and we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.
32
And there was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.
33
And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged.
34
Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.
35
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that when thou hearest a dream thou canst interpret it.
36
And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.
37
And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the brink of the river:
38
and, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fat-fleshed and well-favored: and they fed in the reed-grass:

1
And Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
2
And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down thither and buy [grain] for us from thence, in order that we may live, and not die.
3
And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy [grain] out of Egypt.
4
But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest mischief may befall him.
5
So the sons of Israel came to buy [grain] among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
6
And Joseph, he was the governor over the land — he it was that sold [the corn] to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came and bowed down to him, the face to the earth.
7
And Joseph saw his brethren, and knew them; but he made himself strange to them, and spoke roughly to them, and said to them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.
8
And Joseph knew his brethren, but they did not know him.
9
And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamt of them; and he said to them, Ye are spies: to see the exposed places of the land ye are come.
10
And they said to him, No, my lord; but to buy food are thy servants come.
11
We are all one man's sons; we are honest: thy servants are not spies.
12
And he said to them, No; but to see the exposed places of the land are ye come.
13
And they said, Thy servants were twelve brethren, sons of one man, in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
14
And Joseph said to them, That is it that I have spoken to you, saying, Ye are spies.
15
By this ye shall be put to the proof: as Pharaoh lives, ye shall not go forth hence, unless your youngest brother come hither!
16
Send one of you, that he may fetch your brother, but ye shall be imprisoned, and your words shall be put to the proof, whether the truth is in you; and if not, as Pharaoh lives, ye are spies.
17
And he put them in custody three days.
18
And Joseph said to them the third day, This do, that ye may live: I fearGod.
19
If ye are honest, let one of your brethren remain bound in the house of your prison, but go ye, carry grain for the hunger of your households;
20
and bring your youngest brother to me, in order that your words be verified, and that ye may not die. And they did so.
21
Then they said one to another, We are indeed guilty concerning our brother, whose anguish of soul we saw when he besought us, and we did not hearken; therefore this distress is come upon us.
22
And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Do not sin against the lad? But ye did not hearken; and now behold, his blood also is required.
23
And they did not know that Joseph understood, for the interpreter was between them.
24
And he turned away from them, and wept. And he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
25
And Joseph gave orders to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. And thus did they to them.
26
And they loaded their asses with their grain, and departed thence.
27
And one of them opened his sack to give his ass food in the inn, and saw his money, and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
28
And he said to his brethren, My money is returned [to me], and behold, it is even in my sack. And their heart failed [them], and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this [that]God has done to us?
29
And they came into the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,
30
The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and treated us as spies of the land.
31
And we said to him, We are honest; we are not spies:
32
we are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
33
And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, Hereby shall I know that ye are honest: leave one of your brethren with me, and take [for] the hunger of your households, and go,
34
and bring your youngest brother to me, and I shall know that ye are not spies, but are honest. Your brother will I give up to you; and ye may trade in the land.
35
And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man had his bundle of money in his sack; and they saw their bundles of money, they and their father, and were afraid.
36
And Jacob their father said to them, Ye have bereaved me of children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin! All these things are against me.
37
And Reuben spoke to his father, saying, Slay my two sons if I bring him not back to thee: give him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
38
But he said, My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; and if mischief should befall him by the way in which ye go, then would ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

But they said, Nay, Sir, we thy servants are come to buy food;

15
herein shall ye be manifested; by the health of Pharao, ye shall not depart hence, unless your younger brother come hither.
16
Send one of you, and take your brother; and go ye to prison, till your words be clear, whether ye speak the truth or not; but, if not, by the health of Pharao, verily ye are spies.

And each said to his brother, Yes, indeed, for we are in fault concerning our brother, when we disregarded the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we hearkened not to him; and therefore has this affliction come upon us.
22
And Ruben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Hurt not the boy, and ye heard me not? and, behold, his blood is required.
23
But they knew not that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them.

And Joseph turned away from them, and wept; and again he came to them, and spoke to them; and he took Symeon from them, and bound him before their eyes.

And one having opened his sack to give his asses fodder, at the place where they rested, saw also his bundle of money, for it was on the mouth of his sack.
28
And he said to his brethren, My money has been restored to me, and behold this is in my sack. And their heart was wonder-struck, and they were troubled, saying one to another, What is this that God has done to us?

34
And bring to me your younger brother; then I shall know that ye are not spies, but that ye are men of peace: and I will restore you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land.

3
Descendentes igitur fratres Ioseph decem, ut emerent frumenta in Ægypto,
4
Beniamin domi retento a Iacob, qui dixerat fratribus eius: Ne forte in itinere quidquam patiatur mali:
5
15
Iam nunc experimentum vestri capiam: per salutem Pharaonis non egrediemini hinc, donec veniat frater vester minimus.
16
Mittite ex vobis unum, et adducat eum: vos autem eritis in vinculis, donec probentur quæ dixistis utrum vera an falsa sint: alioquin per salutem Pharaonis exploratores estis.
17
Tradidit ergo illos custodiæ tribus diebus.
18
26
At illi portantes frumenta in asinis suis, profecti sunt.
27
Apertoque unus sacco, ut daret iumento pabulum in diversorio, contemplatus pecuniam in ore sacculi,
28
35
His dictis, cum frumenta effunderent, singuli repererunt in ore saccorum ligatas pecunias, exterritisque simul omnibus,
36
dixit pater Iacob: Absque liberis me esse fecistis, Ioseph non est super, Simeon tenetur in vinculis, et Beniamin auferetis: in me hæc omnia mala reciderunt.
37
Cui respondit Ruben: Duos filios meos interfice, si non reduxero illum tibi: trade illum in manu mea, et ego eum tibi restituam.
38

And they have not known that Joseph understandeth, for the interpreter <FI>is<Fi> between them;
24
and he turneth round from them, and weepeth, and turneth back unto them, and speaketh unto them, and taketh from them Simeon, and bindeth him before their eyes.
25
And Joseph commandeth, and they fill their vessels <FI>with<Fi> corn, also to put back the money of each unto his sack, and to give to them provision for the way; and one doth to them so.
26
And they lift up their corn upon their asses, and go from thence,
27
and the one openeth his sack to give provender to his ass at a lodging-place, and he seeth his money, and lo, it <FI>is<Fi> in the mouth of his bag,
28
and he saith unto his brethren, `My money hath been put back, and also, lo, in my bag:' and their heart goeth out, and they tremble, one to another saying, `What <FI>is<Fi> this God hath done to us!'
29
And they come in unto Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and they declare to him all the things meeting them, saying,
30
`The man, the lord of the land, hath spoken with us sharp things, and maketh us as spies of the land;
31
and we say unto him, We <FI>are<Fi> right men, we have not been spies,
32
we <FI>are<Fi> twelve brethren, sons of our father, the one is not, and the young one <FI>is<Fi> to-day with our father in the land of Canaan.
33
`And the man, the lord of the land, saith unto us, By this I know that ye <FI>are<Fi> right men--one of your brethren leave with me, and <FI>for<Fi> the famine of your houses take ye and go,
34
and bring your young brother unto me, and I know that ye <FI>are<Fi> not spies, but ye <FI>are<Fi> right men; your brother I give to you, and ye trade with the land.'
35
And it cometh to pass, they are emptying their sacks, and lo, the bundle of each man's silver <FI>is<Fi> in his sack, and they see their bundles of silver, they and their father, and are afraid;
36
and Jacob their father saith unto them, `Me ye have bereaved; Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and Benjamin ye take--against me have been all these.'
37
And Reuben speaketh unto his father, saying, `My two sons thou dost put to death, if I bring him not in unto thee; give him into my hand, and I--I bring him back unto thee;'
38
and he saith, `My son doth not go down with you, for his brother <FI>is<Fi> dead, and he by himself is left; when mischief hath met him in the way in which ye go, then ye have brought down my grey hairs in sorrow to sheol.'
